1986 Mercury 200 Black Max

I had a question about the exhaust on this particular motor. I noticed when I started the motor on muffs that before the thermostats opened a small amount of exhaust and water came out of two plastic plates on the leading edge of the lower unit. I asked my mechanic and he said this was normal and was a bypass until the tstats opened. I was curious if anyone else has seen this and if in fact my mechanic is correct.

is the place you are refering to above the cavitation plate?on most mercs the water will not come out of tell tale when you first start them this is normal.just the way their cooling system is set up
