what type of battery will work?? - The Hull Truth

I have a battery for each engine (150 HP HPDI) and a battery for the electronics.....making a total of three batteries. I am going to replace the batteries for the motors. A friend of mine at an auto store has a pair of 920 amp deep cycle batteries. Will these work or will I need "cranking" batteries? What is the difference in the two?

starting batts are good for starting engines - a lot of power avail for a short time - yes - you need these for each engine ( get 800CCA) and a deep cycle group 27 for the electronics - you can never have too much batt capacity...

I run a 175 Johnson ocean pro on a 23' redfi and I to have3 batteres. I have two deep cycle batteries that run all of my accessories and an optima starting battery for my engine. This battery runs only my engine. This set up works well and gives the versatility to swap out batteries if one fails. The deep cycle batteries are more then enough to crank your engine. Good luck with it.

deep cycles will work but you will wear them out faster than starting batts - don't beleive us...call yamaha cust relations and ask them....DI (HPDI) engines take more starting current as they have to energize more components that the old convertional engones..but both will work - it's just that starting batts are a better fit for the engines...

I would not use deep cycle batteries for crank starting your motors. A dual purpose deep cycle yes, but not a regular deep cycle. The DP are designed to give a burst of power for starting, as well as being able to withstand deep discharges. Although I have only one motor (115 HP) I have two batteries on board, each a Dual Purpose deep cycle, each rated at 745 MCA for starting, each connected to a battery switch, and each able to serve as the power source for my limited electronics/electrics (VHF, FF, running lights).

Anybody using Gel or other maintenance-free batteries. Most batts on boats are relatively hard/impossible to check/service

I use flooded SEALED batts - best combo for me of price and low mainteneace...

well i just got back from lunch and picked up two interstate marine / rv starting batteries at 800 cca. damn they are proud of those boogers!
