Default Ranking of Used Boat Manufacturers

I'm looking to buy a 30 - 34 foot cruiser for use in fresh water lakes in Texas. My budget dictates I buy a used boat from the 80's or very early 90's. Can I get some opinions on how the following boat manufacturers would be ranked? Best resale? Any brands to stay away from?

Sea Ray
Cruisers Inc.
Carver
Silverton
Trojan
Wellcraft

Any other brands worth metioning?
Thanks,
Tim

You probably should take your question to another, more general, boating forum. Most of the Guys here own fishing boats not cruisers.

A very popular cruiser in S.Fla. is the Wellcraft St.Tropez circa '86-'90
It is 32ft with platform about 34ft. they have a good reputation, but don't buy the 260hp models, they're pigs, go with 300 to 340hp twins.

Carver also has a good rep

Any of the brands you listed will be well suited to use as a fresh water cruiser. Just be sure to get a good survey for the entire boat.....Hull, engine(s) and generator....to include a sea-trial with the surveyor(s) present. One you did not mention was the Mainship 34' Trawler....There were three models, depending on the year. Mainship I, II and III. These were powered by a single diesel, usually Perkins. Slow as a snail running uphill in a sleet storm, but dead nuts reliable and damned economical. Some of the other, older Trawlers can give you alot of bank for the buck, but may not be all that common in your neck of the woods.

Hope this helps,

Steve

Where in Texas are you?? I thought I was one of the few guys stuck inland in Texas. I would keep my eyes out for Sea Rays or Carvers of that vintage for a lake boat. There are some deals to be had on early mid 80s Chris Crafts right now here in north Texas and Oklahoma.

Thanks all for the input thus far.

Hey finz2right, I am in the Dallas area and have a slip at Eagle Point on Lake Lewisville. Which lake are you on?

Stingerhook, thanks for pointing out that there are no "used boat manufacturers" :-) After reading my post I realized how absurd it sounded but, hopefully, most will understand what I intended to communicate.

My first choice would be the Sea Ray or Cruiser. If you can find a Doral, they are a very good boat.

I would recommend buying "Mid Size Power Boats" by David Pascoe. The book is extremely informative and also has quality ratings of various models. For example:

"Carver has always been an entry-level price boat" (p. 439)
Silverton is shown as an entry-level builder (p. 451)
Sea Ray is listed as a medium quality level builder (p. 452)
He likes the Trojan International series (pp. 449-450) (also see positive reviews on his website)

If you want better quality, look at Tiara or the Trojan International series (again, see reviews on Pascoe's site)

You might consider Tollycraft and Uniflite, a couple of nice quality Northwest builders, which made sedan (flybridge) style boats in that size range. You'll probably find one occasionally in your area.

David

While I woudn't own any of the brands you have listed (they've just never made anything I'd want) the Sea Ray will probably have the best resale value. That being said, don't buy the biggest or newest boat you can afford, buy the best. That might entail buying an older smaller boat, but you'll be happier in the long run.

Doug L.

Default resale?

anything that looks like a cruiser from the 80's or early 90's will be cheap to buy, but you can forget about getting your money back out of it, and expect it to be on the market eating up slip rent for a long time. especially if it burns gas.

The OP asked the question in 2005. Probably a little late for giving him advice.
