Folks,
how much oil does the engine take for an oil change and what kind should I use? How about the gear case,.... how much and what kind should I use? Also plan on new zincs, changing spark plugs and fuel water separators, and dropping in a bottle of water zorb into the first tank. What other things should I check before dropping the boat in? Pls let me know. Thank you! Sincerely,
Greg
Re: Yamaha f225hp four stroke spring launch routine?
Greg, Six quarts of engine oil. What brand of 10-30 is subject to debate, but while under warrantee I bite the bullet and pay through the nose for Yamaha brand. And of course the oil filter. If you search past threads on the subject you'll find some great info and some tricks to make things easier. I think it was HOTSHOT that posted some great pics of the proceedures you asked about. That goes for lower unit gear lube too. If you don't have a manual, get one and all the info you need is in there. Change your plugs too, grease all fittings(manual shows where they all are), change water separator or drain raycor. Make sure you pull the prop off and grease shaft and replace stainless cotter pin. If unsure, you might even pay mech to do it right. You've got alot of $$ invested. Good luck.

Oil capacity is 6 liters (6.34 quarts) . Yamaha recommends changing the water pumps every 500 hours or 3 months. I plan to change mine every other season (approximately 200 hours). Don't forget to add Ring Free to your fuel. Check out Shipyard Island Marine (THT Sponsor section). Lots of good info, Andy is really helpful, and they have great prices.

Thanks Guys, very helpful and much appreciated. Nick, what fittings are you referencing to be greased and what do you think I should search under to find hotshot's post?
RE: Yamaha f225hp four stroke spring launch routine?
I don't own a Yamaha or have a Yamaha F225 owners manual in front of me but a couple of answers you got are not what the owner's manual states.
1. It is not true that you have to use Yamaha oil. You do have to follow the oil specifications called out in the owners manual using the correct weight and API specification. Whether your choice is Castrol, Kendall, Walmart or any other brand of oil that meets the certification, your warranty is just as good as if you used Yamaha oil. There is actually a federal law that protects you on that issue.
2. There is no way that the owners manual specifies changing a water pump at 3 months period.
3. Use ring free or whatever else you think is needed if you want but it has no proven value to the modern 4 stroke engine. When is the last time anyone put Ring-free or the like in the automoble gas tank? 2 strokes are a different matter.
Your owner's manual is your bible, the internet will only provide you someone's opinion. If you don't have one get one and read it. Your questions are clearly answered there.

Oops - Manual says 30 month (bad typing). I have read both the Owner's Manual & the Service Manual. I have received far more practical info from THT than from either of the manuals.
