Bought a small boat that came with a portable 6 gallon gas tank. The tank presently has about 2 gallons of leftover gas that has been premixed (at 50:1) with oil. I do not want to use this gas for the boat.
Can I use this gas without harm in my lawnmower?
If not, what's the best way to properly dispose of it?
Depends, if it’s only a year or two old and no rusty flakes or water are evident, I usually just dump small quantities of old gas (a couple gallons is fine) into the jeep and top up the jeep with fresh gas. If it’s really old and nasty I just take it to the recycle place. With 18 gallons of fresh fuel mixed with a couple gallons of stale, no problems. Don't worry about the pre-mix either.
unless you have a 2 stroke lawn mower, I wouldn't use it. I normally use old gas to start fires, as I live out in the boonies and we are always cutting back trees or burning off a field or building a fire to drink beer around, so it comes in handy.
pour it in and wide shallow pan, or soak in in a towel and let in evaporate. keep the dog and kids away from the container. I know its wrong, but for that little amount its as effective as anything.
When I repowerred to self-oiling, I ran the old gas full-strength in my lawn tractor and push mower with no ill effects. I had 12 gallons so it took a while.
Just make sure you have a filter on the mower or run it through a filter when you transfer the fuel.
