Default My ignition is beeping on my Tracker houseboat...

When I put the key into the ignition on my tracker houseboat, there is a beeping sound from under the console and it is driviing me nutty. I do not know if it is a short, engine warning or means "Swim to shore ASAP" Does any one in here know the hull truth about my problem. I would like to fix/diagnose the problem soon as spring is arriving soon, and I am getting ready to eat, drink and swim.

Since you state that it is a Tracker product it is going to be a Merc in disguise. The “beeps” you hear are the alarms “self testing” to make sure they are in working condition. Read the owners manual to find out what each “beep” means. You may even want to keep the manual on board or make yourself a “cheat sheet” the keep handy…….. MY policy is to shut off the engine when any alarm sounds, determine WHICH alarm was sounding and go from there…….

What is with the flurry of problems concerning engine warning systems, mostly mercury?

What does your owners manual say about the warning horn? On a mercury/mariner the system usually beeps three times when you first turn on the key. This is to let you know the system is working.

If you get beeps after the engine is running it is one of two things. Either water in the fuel filter (EFI Models) or a problem in the oil injection system. Continuing to operate the motor with a beeping horn, without knowing what the exact problem is, can put your motor at peril. At the worst it could be a failed oil pump or sheared oil pump drive gear, both of which leave you operating without oil being mixed with the gasoline. If it is a fault in the system the beeping horn will drive you nuts.

A steady horn means the overheat system is trying to tell you something. Could be an overheat or could be a false alarm. Again, you don't want to continue to operate if the motor is overheating.

Let us know what you find out.

The engine is not overheating and I cannot figure why the tach has stopped working. I will check the engine for water, but it too seems to be running fine. Perhaps letting the boat sit over the winter in all the rain we have been having in California has created a short, or a problem with the motor? I am not sure. I do not have the manual and cannot take the fourty foot long pontoon out of the lake to service in my city. I am still perplexed...

You should be able to obtain the manual on line from the Merc website....

Did you check the oil? Have you eliminated any other possible causes besides water tell-tale?

Exactly what year and model, motor do you have? Does the beep continue while running?* What pattern is the beep, continous, 1 pause 1, 2*pause 3, etc... ?

The more info you provide the better chance of getting a meaningful response. You can order manuals online or at any Merc dealer. They will need your serial number just like when orderring a part.

Good luck!

I will get back to you all about the problem as I can...It continues to rain in Cali and I am losing my spring fever quickly.

Otherwise, it is a constant beep, beep beep beep beep beep beep as the boat is running. The motor is a two stroke and requires oil mixture with gas. Thank you all for the help though, it is well appreciated.
