Default Yamaha F225 Vs. F250

Check this out, I thought it was pretty interesting:

The F225 beat the F250 by .1 MPH on a 23' Regulator! To top it all off, the test weight of the F225 boat was 5,558 lbs. compared to 5,276 for the F250. They were tested on different days in different locations, so I am sure that the F250 would outrun the F225, but I wouldn't expect it to be by much! At 5000 the F225 pushed it's boat at 34.8 MPH while burning 13.1 GPH, while the F250 pushed it's boat to 35.3 MPH burning 14.5 GPH!

Here are the Tests:

Too bad, I was hoping they would put up a little competition to the Verados, E-Tecs, and Suzukis. Yamaha needs to get back with the program if those tests are indeed valid (which I assume they are since they're from Regulator).

There are a number of variables between the two tests that may have influenced the results, such as: gallons of fuel on board, wind velocity, prop diameter, mounting position of engine.

But perhaps it is the model designation beneath the picture of the motor on the F250 performance bulliten that best sums it up. Check it out.

I wouldn't get carried away assigning much significance to the comparison. The F225 test is four years old and in my experience, the Yamaha bulletins have been getting a little more realistic as time passes. If you look at the newer tests for the larger Regulators, you will see that the F250 rigged boats can swing a larger pitch prop than the F225 equipped boats -- that's the real indicator of a performance difference. From my own direct experience in seatrials, there was a very noticeable difference in performance between the Regulator 23 equipped with an F225 and one with a 250 OX66 two stroke, so I would be very surprised if a similar difference is not evident with the F250. By all other tests, the F250 seems able to hold its own with the Yamaha 250 two strokes and other manufacturers' 250 hp motors.

I wouldn't expect much more than a couple mph on the top end but on equal footing I bet the midrange and hole shot on the F250 would be where the big difference is. Especially on a heavier boat.

I have a Pursuit 3070 Offshore on order and spoke to Pursuit this morning regarding some performance specs. I am going with the F250's and have been on a 3370 with the motors. There is no question a difference. Pursuits numbers on the 3070 are not published yet as they are only preliminary numbers. They did charts comparing everything on 2 stroke hpdi and 4 stroke motors, ie 200 all the way to 300 hp. Overall the F250 was noticeably better for this particular hull. I won't go into all the details but based on my first hand experience riding on a 3370 and looking at these numbers the torque is the biggest difference and the hp is most beneficial on hulls that need the extra ponies.

Hopefully Pursuit will finish their tests and post on the web for everyone to see.

Check out the numbers on the Southport 28 with F225's and F250's. The F250's actually got better GPH than the 225's. Check it out at http://www.southport-boatworks.com/28cc.php and on the Yamaha performance site.
