Default Scout 222 Dorado and Aquasport 215 Osprey Sport

Need help deciding between a Scout 222 Dorado (225 yammie)
and an Aquasport 215 Osprey Sport (250 yammie hpdi). Have not yet test ride either but the difficulty is that I want a hybrid type boat capable of fishing and skiing but the aquasport weighs 900lbs. (dry weight) more than the 222 scout which could be an issue for pulling skiers out of the hole. They both seem like excellent vessels (maybe the aquasport has the edge for fishing?) Need imput from knowledgeable individuals who can help me out with this decision. Thanks!

I can guarentee you that A 250 on a 215 will be a hotrod. I have a 200 on mine and it is perfect for wakeboarding and also does alright pulling my big ass out of the water on a solomn. I recommend the aqua, but I have never been on the scout. Where are you scout fans?

I wanted to like the Scout but the TINY bow seating area was a definite deal-killer for me. Scout's own smaller 202 Dorado has a larger bow seating area than the 222. Very cramped for even two adults.

hey, petersr2, thanks for you reply. I'm curious about top end speed as well. How fast can she do with the 200. Also is the boat designed as well for fishing as they say she is?

I have the 205 aquasport tournament osprey deep v. It is powered by a 175 evinrude tops out at 42 with the t-tops This boat is great. Runs awesome I have had it off 42 miles and in some pretty rough stuff. It is an awesome boat. Mine is not made this year it is the same as the larger cc off shore boat just not as long 2 feet shorter.

I top out at 49 with my merc. It is a saltwater carb 200. With a full load of ice and 3 guys, run in mid 40's. IMHO, 250 is too much for this boat, but to each his own. It performs very well as a drift/ancor platform. Offshore trolling is not bad, concidering the modified v. I pick my days to run offshore, but have been 50 miles out in the gulf. Get Tabs on this boat.

Once you learn her hull, the boat performs well in many situations.

Gulf Of Mexico and Galveston Bay (tx)
Should you run it in 4's in the tight gulf chop? No, but many 23-29 ft boats should avoid these conditions as well. If you respect the weather and water, you will love this boat. I have been out in 5's and felt safe, just have to slow it way down. I avoid anything larger than 3, if forcast is calling for 3+, I stay in the bay.

Virginia Beach VA
Now for the Chesapeake, that is a different story. I do not know this body of water that well and have been caught in 4's with the kids and the wife. Was not plesant getting home, but I felt safe (don't think the wife felt the same). Have not been into the Atlantic so can't report (it was blown out for each trip planned).

I guess bottom line, it will be a great boat if you use it properly. No boat is perfect.

I wouldn't mind having a 250 on my Aquasport 215 but would only really get to use the extra speed when lake boating. It would be a hot rod. In the ocean I can almost never go WOT anyway, but cruise at 30 - 32 all the time...

A 200hpdi would work fine, and would definitely pull even large people up on slalom quite crisply. BTW, I see the extra weight as an advantage for stability and ride when the seas are not quite flat.

Get trim tabs. They make a huge difference on this hull.

I don't know anything about the Scout, but I saw one recently at the boat show and was not impressed with the comfort up front as previously stated...

ditto on the bow seating. the aft seating at an angle is weird to me as well. at first it's like, "hey, that's cool. it's different!" then, when you really see it up close and think about it, it doesn't seem that cool. i'm not scout bashing by any means, but the layout doesn't appeal to me. the 215 seems well-thought out and very practical... exactly why i want one! ha.
