Default Yamaha 4 stroke speedometer, How does it work

I'm doing a water pump on my 2003 Yamaha 200 4 stroke.
My yamaha speedomed gradually stopped working last season, and I want to fix it.
I'm pretty sure water gets pulled in through a small hole in the lower unit and I guess it goes up to a paddle wheel or some kind of gauge, and I'm thinking there is a restriction that needs to be cleaned out.
Anyone have some advice what to do to get it cleaned out or how to get it working ?
Thanks

Just clean out the hole on the leading edge of the lower unit right above the lower gearcase. (Pitot tube) They clog up quite easily.

Thanks for the reply!
But I would like to know how or what makes it work!
Does water travel through a tube up to the power head and turn a wheel paddle or go to a pressure switch?
Thanks again!

No paddle wheel, works on air pressure I believe. A tube goes from hole in leading edge of lower unit to the gauge. This air pressure gauge is calibrated in mph. Generally not very accurate, thats why you see a lot of guys refering to gps for speed.

Hey Ron - Beetle here.
FYI
Yammie just came out with a combo guage, Fuel Management and Speedo guage functions all in one guage. I looked into it for my boat.
You have the option to plug unit into a GPS for accurate speed reading on the unit.
email me for more details

Water pressure to a pressure transducer. The digital gauge can be set for mph, km/h or knots. There is a selector switch on the back of the gauge.

Yamaha digital speedos display battery voltage, trip odometer, time clock and fuel (in tank). Fuel management is seperate. The digital tach also has the overheat and low oil pressure, along with the engine trim setting

Default RE: Yamaha 4 stroke speedometer, How does it work

I just fixed this problem on my 2002 Yamaha F115 4-stroke. I had hit a piece of floating plant debris...the tube plugs easily. There is a small metal tube on the leading edge of the lower unit. Take a small drill bit and BY HAND slowly twist at the [insert here] obstruction.

If necessary, there is a piece of vinyl aquarium tubing looking stuff exiting the lower unit, and returning into the main engine housing, then also emerging from the engine and running to the console. You can open this up and use an air compressor (I blew about 60-70 psi through it) to blow it out backwards. If necessary you can cut the line and put it all back together with an inline double nipple thingie and hose clamps or small zip ties.

The gauge works on air pressure (pitot tube), and is used for boats and airplanes. It is a very accurate gauge compared to a paddlewheel...it is generally dead on with a correction for current speed with GPS....I was glad to have mine fixed.

There is no calibration or fixing to be done after you remove the obstruction - it should start working again normally once you clear it out.

Be careful with the drill bit though...lots of aluminum in there. I wouldn't use any power...do it by hand. I hand drilled what I could out and then blew out the remainder. Kinda nasty...there was rotting organic material above the blockage...was good to clear it out.

The boat is a 2003 with close to 600 hrs,
so I thinks it's time!
Plus,
As with anything on a boat,
If you don't service things every year or every other year, when it comes time that something does wear out or break ,
you will most likely have trouble breaking bolts loose and other corrosion problems!

FYI,

Check this THT thread out......covers the new Yamaha SpeedometerFuel Managment gauge and the location on the Yamaha lower units for the pitot tube openings.

The info is near the bottom of the thread.......
