Random Quote: Who dat! Say who dat! When I say who dat!
The question was asked on the Florida Sportsman Forum a couple of weeks ago. The answers given were pretty much limited to coastal Florida, though there was some grudging recognition that the Northeast had inlets that would curl your hair.
While not technically an Inlet my vote goes for the Columbia River Bar as the worst stretch of water a boater would have to pass over to get to the sea. In the east Hatteras is the worst I have seen, but I have not been through anything north of Ocean City so I really don't know.
Which ones do you think are the worst, most dangerous, apt to be unpassable? Pictures and personal horror stories as evidence of a bad inlet are welcome.
The worst inlet and my stupidest mistake were all in one shot. I delivered a GB 2670*down to a customer in Boca Rotan.....We putted around for while and then headed out. He was familiar with the area.....*East wind 20-25mph . The water went from nothing to some of the largest tightest waves I have ever been in. Idle speed...anything faster and we were just airborne. You know that gut up into your throat feeling.
After we got away from the inlet a 12 mile or so the waves got further apart and it was more manageable. Then the surf ride back in......WOW.
All in a new boat no less....that was the stupid part. I had a few hours on*the boat before I delivered*it*but nothing over slow speeds. Thank god nothing happened. It would have been a GB on the rocks for sure and no idea how to get off the boat.

Whats the one up in Oregon or Seatle?? From the pics I've seen of that one, all others are just a walk in the park, figuritivley speaking of course. I think it begins with a P.
Edit: Puget Sound! I guess that would be considered the Columbia River.
The worst in the US is the columbia river, hands down. The Coast Guard did not locate their motor lifeboat school there by chance. These boats are designed to roll completely , and they do, again, and again, and again. If you have ever seen the videos , its an eye opener. Looks damned fun.
Lot of the smaller boats have trouble up here on a good windy day with the mouth of the merrimack river in newburyport. I have heard of a couple people flipping boats around here. I have never really had a problem but I guess it is sometimes rough.

Clearwater pass on July 4th weekend: you got t-backs making you loose your line of sight, suntan oil and sweat making you lose your grip on the helm, drunks coming at you like mad men, cops making you nervous, lighting making you glow.......I'm telling ya it's a killer.......
Puget Sound has nothing to do with the Columbia River Bar. The CRB is a bad one.....but it can also be as flat as a pancake. The CG monitors it pretty well and shuts her down when things get too bad.
Bogue Inlet, Emerald Isle, NC is no longer being dredged by Army Corp of Engineers and the word is "3' deep at low tide". Went out this past October in BW Montauk and it stood as straight up as I ever want to be again.
