Can a standard inductive type timing light be used to check the timing on a 2003 Johnson 60º V6, and is the idle specification of 6º, 6º ATDC or 6º BTDC? I thought it was BTDC, but a older Clymer manual has ATDC.
No you need to use a special OMC Ignition Analyzer. The analyzer powers up the on engine sensor and measures the output of the sensor. This allows the setting of both the idle timing and maximum timing without operating the powerhead-saves time and money. Most dealers no longer have test tanks or on water testing sites. So OMC developed this method along with the special equipment.Yes the correct value using the special equipment/procedure is 6*ATDC.The motor runs with the timing in the cylinder at app.30*BTDC.
