Default 210 Whaler Outrage livewell filling problem

When I hit the pump switch the water is filling the livewell but it drains quickly so the water level is very low (maybe 6" - way below the light and overflow). Logic dictates that there should be some kind of check valve on the drain to close it when the box is being filled and opened when you stop the pump to drain the livewell.
Am I correct or is it something else?

My 190 had a plug that you put in the bottom drain, then it filled up and drained out of the upper drain. When you were done with it you pulled the bottom plug out to empty it.

Thats how mine works too. Make sure your plug is in.

Thank you, great info. What kind of plug is it? Does it have some kind of string attached so that you don't have to get wet to unplug? The well is quite deep.

No string. I just let mine sit in the bottom of the well when not using it. It is soft plastic so it wont damage anything. When i need it i just plug it in.. When i want to drain the well i just reach down and pull it. I do get a little wet doing it but no big deal.

If you bought the boat new i t should have come with one. Mine even came with a backup.

If you dont have one, just contact BW customer support and they will help you get one.

Should be a tube that came with the boat. The tube has a plastic strainer at one end (top end) and the other end (bottom) has a rubber fitting. The rubber fitting goes into the drain. With this in place, the water only drains once it gets up to the top of the tube. Look around, should be on the boat.

Usually with a simple live well in a small CC you...
put the plug in
open the seacock under your live well pump
start your live well pump
fish live bait
turn off your live well pump
live well will drain though the live well pump
remove the plug to empty the last bit of water from the well
close the seacock

what if you plug it and forget to shut it off when filled?

I'm on a boat is correct. should be a 18" or so long plastic tube that you stuff into the drain hole. the water reach the opening at cht etop and drains, continually refreshing the water without chance of over flow.

There is a drain on the side of the tank. There is also a valve to adjust the water inflow.

I have the plastic tube like a lot you are describing, however from what I am reading on here about the Whaler livewell systems, they appear to have 2 drains, an upper drain that acts as the overflow when the well is full, and a lower drain which completely drains the livewell. When you plug the the lower drain the upper drain acts as the overflow.

Oh gotcha. I'm not familiar with that but makes sense.

then they can just tie a string the plug so you don't have to put your arm in the livewell.

Yes. This is how it works. Top drain is overflow. Bottom drain is the main drain. Add the tube, and the livewell fills up. The water level will stay at the top of the tube. The overflow, is designed to do exactly that, ensure that in the event of a clogged main drain, your livewell doesn't overflow, and possibly cause a safety issue.

To fix the issue:
Step 1. Find the tube!
Step 2. Plug in said tube
Step 3. Unplug your computer (or at least sign off THT.com) and go fish!

Some great info here. Thank you!
Now I know what to look for and I actually found some aftermarket plugs and pipes online. Now I just need to measure the drain outlet diameter and I'm good to go

On my 260 outrage all I have is a plug for the drain. The overflow is built into the upper few inches of the livewell.

The plug on my Outrage (2001) has a flange on top as well as a ring. You barely need to insert the plug into the drain for the live well to fill. When you want to drain the live well, place the rim of your bait net under the flange of the plug and pull up. The plug pops out and the live well drains.

Guys again it seems as if the outrage doesn't have a standpipe.... It has a lower drain with a simple plug and an upper overflow drain.

Correct. There is NO standpipe. Just a hole in the bottom that gets plugged. When the water reaches the height of the overflow drain, it drains out.

My boat actually has 2 overflows, one being higher than the other. I can use a second plug to plug up the lower overflow drain and the water will come up to just below the access hatch where it drains out of the higher overflow drain.. I dont know if all the outrages have this. Could be because i run a larger boat, hence a larger well.

Not sure whether you have the 210 Outrage or the 21 Outrage either wasy here's what the plumbing looks like on the livewell.
