Default Fuel consumption: 70hp Johnson 2 stroke vs 90 Etec

Any noticeable difference? I'm considering repowering with the Etec 90. I've read a lot about fuel efficiency and suspect if I was going from a 90hp two stroke to a 90 Etec that fuel efficiency would increase. Should I expect the same moving from a 70 two stroke to a 90 Etec? Or will the additional hp negate any of the gains?

If it matters, the boat I am is similar in weight and hull shape to a maritime 18 (Tripp Angler).

Thanks

Sure..you should recover your costs in about 25 to 30 years! How old are you?

JennyB, with that Hull and HP, you are talking about a major performance improvement and TINY diffs in fuel burn.

What the heck is the diff? 6 Gals/per full day versus 7 gals? By this summer that adds up to what?$2.50. A Rapala costs $10.00.

Power up. If you are sweating the gas mileage/cost effectiveness in a older 70 2 stroke v 90 Etec, you need a new hobby!

I am not trying to cost justify the repower. I am trying to determine if I will gain range. My problem is that I only have a 20 gallon tank - in a given day I can run quite far - due to the limited capacity I often find myself having to refuel which is an inconvenience and requires planning - in an ideal world I would like to eliminate this necessity or at least minimize it.

JennyB,

Look for a 10-30% improvement depending on the type of boating you do. It may not be a huge savings on a small boat, but you will get many other benefits other than fuel savings, less oil usage, lower maintenance and excellent running quality and turn-key starting.

Jenny,
I can almost guarantee you that the E-TEC 90 is going to give to more range/use less fuel than the 70hp Johnson. Those 3-cylinder Johnson 70s are rock solid, great running little motors. But the 3 carbs on them are thirsty little boogers.

In considering all of the repower options, the E-TEC 90 is a great choice!

i would say you should get a 25 to 30% boost in gas milage & big jump in oil milage if you use the xd 100 oil.you will probably only fill your oil tank up once a season unless you run alot of hours . how much range are you looking for ?by the way i think the e-tec would be a great engine

Thanks all for the responses.

SCAngler: I mainly fly and light tackle fish and spend a lot of my time running to local Islands that can be anywhere from a 10 to 20 plus nautical mile runs from home port. I'd like to increase range enough so that I can go slightly further offshore when the opportunities present themselves and so that I don't have to pull into port to refuel in order to make the return trip.

What I'm really looking to gain by repowering is performance. Things are great if it's just me and one other, but performance becomes very sluggish when the boat is weighted down with 4 adults plus gear - I'm essentially running the boat WOT the entire time in the latter scenario.

if that's what you are looking for then the e- tec will fill the bill on both counts.gas will make you feel like you have around a 25 or 26 gallon tank & oil...using xd-100 you should get around 50 hrs run time on a tank.in a recent test of all the 90 hp engines the e-techad the best performance out of all of them.

Go the etec, you will either run at the same speed you do now or you will get there quicker and either way you will use less fuel, ie more range.
I have the 75 hp etec and seriously I recon it uses less juice than my old carbed 25 hp johnson LOVE IT!!

I agree with TexasWhaler and SCangler. Depending on your mix of trolling vs. wide open, you could see as much as a 50% increase in range. If you can't afford the XD-100 oil, use a good quality full synthetic 2 stroke oil.

One of the coolest things about the E-Tec 75/90 is that the oil tank is under the hood. No extra plumbing They say an "average" user might only have to fill it once a year
