Complaint about boating magazines----If it's an offshore boat test it in offshore conditions
I'm sick of reading reports of boat tests on offshore boats that are done on some lake 500 miles inland. "We went over our own wake and it sounded really solid""We think that it would do just fine in 5-7ft seas".
And also, speed and economy numbers that are given are also misleading. They rarely have a full load of fuel or more than 1 0r 2 passengers. Or do they add the weight of gear, coolers with beverages, exta batteries, oil, water, ice , full baitwell and 4 big dudes.
I think that magazines should test offshore hulls OFFSHORE and bass boat hulls on Lakes.
And, show us some pictures of the boats going offshore.
I just had to say that.............Paul
I think that most people heading offshore fill their tanks, have bait on the boat, have food drinks and a few buddies right? Or am I the minority that runs full loads?
I guess if you go alone, not far and dont like to eat or drink or fish and run 15 gallons of fuel the tests are accurate.

I agree. Another big problem is the fact that they put out biased info and dont rig the boats properly sometimes. They are done on boats and engines that are major sponsors of the mags and are afraid to piss them off.

The boat reviews are just advertizing, nothing more and nothing less. Have you ever seen a bad review? If there was one the manufacturer is going to pull his advertizing right away. The reviews might as well be written by the manufacturer.

test.........bass boat........why bother? they are a complete waste of perfectly good fiberglass and nice outboards. WTF would anyone in the right mind put carpet in a FISHING BOAT? get a small CC, spend tons less money, and have a much better boat.
sorry if I seem like Im b!tching. I just get sick of having bass boats blow by me with "operators" who are p!ss drunk and not paying a bit of attention to what they are doing, running 70mph all the while. this makes me especially mad at night.

That’s why we have the Hull Truth.
You can’t rely on a magazine review.
Of all the major magazines Boating is the only one that lists one or two minuses about the boat. They have a lot of courage to do that because they are the only one who does.
Power Boat Reports is excellent but is quite expensive.
Miami Vice

I get power boat reports, they don't take advertisement money and usually give pros and cons of each boat or piece of equipment that they report on, but because I am new to this, I don't know enough to know if I'm getting snowed.

I felt exactly the same way a few years ago . . . I would not have bought the boat that I bought six years ago if I had known about boards like TheHullTruth

You ever seen a boat with only 'average' ratings in a magazine? No way! Not with all those advertisers paying the bills. Everyone above has scored a direct hit on why one should pay very little attention to what the reviewers say, unless of course, they are talking about your model, when all the glowing BS is true.

Cars, boats, bikes etc - the only thing the Mag "tests" are good for is the pics and getting a features/layout of the product. That's a given....if you want the truth you have to go to publications that end in "reports" as in:

Just once....I would like to see a bad review!!!
Read some of Dave Pasoe's reviews....brutally honest.
I've never read what I call a truly objective boat review in SWS, Sport Fishing, or Marlin magazines. They ought to call it advertisements, as that is what they truly are. None of these folks would risk pi**ing off a major advertiser--I wouldn't be surprised the magazines get some sort of compensation from the manufacturer for the "review".
RE: Complaint about boating magazines----If it's an offshore boat test it in offshore conditions
I agree I've never read a bad review, but keep in mind the boats(manufacturers) they are reviewing are a major source of income that keep the magazine going. Just one time I would like to read - " This boat pounds like a mother, we needed a crash helmet and a mouth guard just to make it through the pass." It just isn't going to happen. One truthful review like that and that company would never spend another dollar with that magazine. This forum and others like it carry a whole lot more weight with me than published boat reviews. From what I've read here people fortunately, "tell it like it is".

Gotta love them fluff reviews. All boats are great, ride like they are on a cushion or air, turn on a dime, survive huricanes, and will last years without anything failing! I 2nd the idea that if you really want to know the good, bad, and ugly, about a boat pay a few bucks to talk to a seasoned surveyer once you know the general size and style you want before you even start seriously shopping. Dave Pascoe is brutal, but any boat that passes his smell test is bound to be a winner.
