Default New NavNet Details

For those of you who have been waiting for more information about the next generation Furuno NavNet equipment, they just posted the specs on the Japanese website (don't worry, it's in English). http://www.furuno.co.jp/english/navn...ifications.pdf

Seems pretty much the same as the old except for supposedly faster processor and the shift to SD memory cards and Navionics Gold and C-Map Max cartography.

What are the sentences for the DSC stuff to show up on your CP?

The reason I ask is because the new NN lists DSC and DSE as sentences it understands... The older stuff has no idea what that is...provided those are the DSC sentences.

My ICOM M502A lists DSE and DSC as the position reporting NMEA sentences that it will output. I think that's what you are looking for.

Except for the chart formats and the DSC sentences it looks pretty much like my old NavNet. I'm surprised they didn't go with 100BaseT. That implies some sort of interoperability with the old gear, I would guess. Any clues on that? Saltdog...got your email. Thanks for the thoughts on the speed thing.

Oops...just went to the Furuno site again...you can now plug a PC with MaxSea NavNet software into the ethernet and it acts like a NavNet device! At least, that's what it says

Watched a fishing show and they used the MaxSea software aboard a large sportfisher. That stuff is BAD A$$.

Anybody seen ordering information for MaxSea NavNet? Where to get it?

Also, Furuno tech support tells me the original NavNet and the VX2 are mostly compatible, except for exchanging plotter and charts information. Cool!

A Furuno rep told me that it would be at least a few weeks before the NavNet MaxSea is in their distribution channels. You should be able to order it through any Furuno dealer. They are still a little vague on all the features and the interoperability with the regular NavNet displays, both old and the new VX2. There will also be some new software upgrades coming for the old NavNet units.

I'm a little surprised that Furuno did not do a little more to match some the features of the new units from their competitors. For example, the side-by-side dual range radar and plotter display on the Simrad CX series or the much higher screen quality on the Simrad are very appealing. The Garmin and Raymarine networking seem a bit simpler as well.

That NavNet MaxSea should be dynamite for a friend of mine who has Black Box NavNet and a PC based system that can display on his bridge through the same monitors. The PC is so much easier to use for navigation planning, it will be great to export everything to the NavNet units instead of working in parallel.

Steve -- I was thinking about how my autopilot reacts when it goes to transition speed and I think it would be very unsafe to have a paddlewheel slow down and have the autopilot transition to fast response while still at full planing speed. What do you get with STW versus SOG? Just being a couple of knots "more right" if your paddlewheel is working when there is a lot of current or wind? Versus being 20 knots wrong when your STW screws up (as they always do)? You could get thrown around unexpectedly.
