Default Best boat under $10,000

I could use a little help - actually alot of help if you listen to my wife

I am looking for a good, reliable, well built, effeceint, and hopefully dry, boat to use on the York River and occasionally on the bbt (calm days). I am not opposed to buying a quality used CC boat and motor w/trailer if I am getting more boat for the money. My primary use will be fishing for Striper, Blues, Flounder, Trout, etc., with some running around and playing as well. I have a couple of young boys that I would like to take with me when they get a littl bigger but that shouldn't drive the decision. I've been looking in the 17-19 foot range and have been by Ed's and surfed the used listings.

Boats I like are used BW Mauntauk's or Outrages, Sea Hunt 172 0r 186, Maycrafts, McKee 1800 Pulse, and possibly SeaPros.

Could you please give me any recommendations based upon experience, of boats I should be looking for and hope to find in this price range.

Also are there any motors to absolutely stay away from or bad years for some of the otherwise good motors. What are the most important things to look for with a used boat - things that would be deal killers.

Should I be leary of repowered 20 year old whalers if they look clean or have been re-gelcoated?

Any trailers to stay away from.

And last but not least, do you know of any economical ways to get a boat towed to Virginia at a reasonable cost?

Thanks for all your help - this website is the BEST!

Take a look at this. As safe as the whaler, rides MUCH better. Good boats at a bargain price.

Take a look at this one: http://www.thehulltruth.com/forums/t...art=1&posts=12

That is one heck of a boat at a good price. A boat you can "grow into" with the young ones for sure.

Our first boat was a 18' CC Sea Pro with 90 merc. We used it for the exact same you did, chesapeake bay, with runs to the BBT when weather was good. We got a 2001 with trailer and some extras for $13,000. I highly recommend looking at new from Ed's or a 2-3 year old Sea pro or Sea Hunt, which will be right around $10,000.

Regards,
Andreas

Justy checked Ed's website, and they have the Sea Pro 17 cc with 60 yamaha and trailer out the door for $11,987.40. With the financing they can give you on a new boat, it might be comparable to buying a used $10,000 boat.

Matt, I have owned 2 Montauks for the last 19 years . My son grew up fishing , and later how to run and mantain boats in the 17 ft . BW hulls. I cannot think of a safer boat for what you have described for your needs.
If you can find a mid 80s to mid 90s montauk and put new power on it , you will never be sorry.
A decent hull may cost around 4 or 5 k . I have a 2000 f100 yamha four stroke on a 1976 17ft BW. and would let my 70 year old mom take it out by her self , I have that much faith in the boat and motor.
I also have a 1977 18 ft. Mckee Craft ( Waypoint CC ) that im very impressed with and will keep both of these boats for a long time.
The Outrages are nice but hard to find.
The 10 to 20 year old whalers may have a few sipder cracks in the gell coat , but are not a big deal. Good luck Dave

I was gonna' tell him about that one, too - looks like it's SOLD though?

MATAPONI,

Go to the BOAT SHOW this coming weekend and look at a few! You said you'd already been to Ed's? Go to the show and take another look at the May-Craft "1800" (or at the pics I posted) - $11,499 w/90 Yama and trailer for a NEW rig (i.e. WARRANTY!).

Having a gerneral idea of where you'll be fishing, I think that may be a good rig for you!

Go to the show ANYWAY - might see something else there. Maybe not $10K, but close.

Regards,

I got my boat for $8600. She's dry, stable and a pleasure to run. When I got her she needed alot of work but it has payed off. Are you opposed to a fixer uper?

Stratos is the brand. Thery show up infrequently on the major buying sites like boattradreonline but when they do they are inexpensive and a hell of a deal.

Whalers are great, but i would bump up to the outrage over the montauk for your use. Parker, c hawk, maycraft, dusky, aquasport. lost of great used boats out there in your pricerange.
