I'm looking at buying a new boat and have been reading the dealer/manufacturer info. on the Evinrude E-tec engines. Besides all the hype, does anyone have any experience with these engines?
Thanks.
The small ones have been out for two years now and I have heard nothing but good reports on them. The V6's have not been out long enough to prove anything.
THE E-tec is a very good engine....the small one's have proven to be very reliable.there are some guide's who have been running the larger v-6's with very good results also.imho i think it is the best engine on the market
Just sent a demo back to the factory that we and the factory ran for aprox 93 hrs total.I can tell you from this motor that we ran and they came and ran for the e/p/a I have not run anything like it .I was 100% sold on it.We sell yam and bomb.If you want a 115 or 150 the yam 4 strokes are nice,if you want the big v 6 the yamahas will not touch this motor .I sell the two so I am letting you in on what we have seen. And if you are going to get on the evenrude suck and yam is great again we do any one you like and I can tell you i hate motors that break more than the guy that owns the boat.It in no win for the dealer or customer. But we have ben very happy with evenrudes and somewhat so with yamaha.
The technology seems interesting.....almost no oil used, but still a two stroke.....space age pistons and cylinders.... it looks very good on the drawing board.....
What I think would be totally cool would be twin e-tec 90s behind a 22 footer. Should be great fuel economy and I understand that they are really quiet.
I have read all extemely positive reports on other sites about the ETEC's. Most indicate they feel they're the best motor thus far. Many giving the reports traded in Yamaha's to get them and have experience with both brands.
I have done a fair amount of research on these motors, and a 250 will be on the transom of my new boat come March (Sailfish 236). Told the dealer to take off the Yam F225 that was already on it. I lost 83 pounds at the transom, gained 25 horses, have not given anything up as far as quietness, I don't have to change oil & filters, and the first scheduled maintenance isn't until 300 hours. A good decision in my book .
Atomic dog is this a new boat purchase or repowe? The reason I asked is because I really liked the 236 but crossed it off my list because the local dealer told me Yamaha only and I'm set on E-TEC on new boat.
Yep, it's a new purchase. My dealer (Manteo Marine in Manteo, NC) also sells Rudes/Johnsons, so that may have been why he was willing and able to make the switch.
I read a review that said the big block E-tec's are much quicker out of the hole than big four strokes (said the E-tec accelerated like a motorcycle). But are they as quiet as 4 strokes? Do they smoke? Are they as reliable?
Here's a link to the Evinrude site. Click on the etec link in the upper right corner of the page for the performance #'s.
In a nutshell - as quiet (Evinrude claims it has a more "pleasant" sound), lighter, higher amperage output, lower operating costs, less maintenance, etc.
I don't know, but why would it be much more than the current 100 hour check?
Plugs, compression, change LU fluid (which I would do at every 100 hours anyway), throw some Triple Guard on it and away you go. Maybe new water pump depending how long it took to get to 300 hours.
service interval is 3 years not 300 hrs., according to web site
Right from the Evinrude Website :
"EASY TO OWN AND OPERATE Evinrude E-TEC outboards require no scheduled dealer maintenance - that's right, zero - for the first three years or 300 hours of normal recreational use. Not even gearcase lube. You'll never have to change the oil or the oil filter, which can cost several hundred dollars each year for other technologies."
I particularly like the self-winterizing function. Push a button, hit the grease zircs with some grease, you're done!
