Default 272 vs 282 GW Sailfish

Anybody have any comments about the ride and any difference between a 1999 GW 27' Sailfish and a 2001 28' Sailfish. I noticed Grady stopped making the 27'. Did they just decide to make it bigger? Were there any issues with the 27?

I am looking at a couple of 27's. I've noticed there are a lot of them on the market.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Dave

Dave,

The hull is the same. The cockpit layout is different prompting Grady to change the model number.

Sailfish,

How's the ride? Any issues, complaints, things I should look for? How are you rigged? And, what is the burn rate? I need info Man, info!

Also, how do you find the accomodations. I am trying to get my wife a bit more involved to increase our (my) time on the water. She's not a big boating fan. Hates the motion on my 21'WA but doesn't mind my uncles 34'. So I'm looking for something with a better ride and something that will accomodate 4 for a few overnighters at the dock. But, it will still primarily be used to fish.

I appreaciate the feedback.

Regards,
Dave

Pascoe has an excellent review of the 272. He mentioned an annoying list at speed of 10 degrees or so, that would bug the heck out of me. If GW didn't change the hull on the 282 I wonder how they solved that problem.

There is room for two in the v berth and one in the aft. I don't see how to sleep four in the cabin on my 272.

I have a 1995 powered with 200's. I thought it was going to be underpowered since I was moving up from a Grady 263 CC with 200's. It is no speed demon, but I wouldn't consider the boat underpowered. I burn ROUGHLY around 20 GPH at about 3800 rmp moving at about 30 mph. Sorry, there is ice at my dock so it is a little hard to remember the numbers exactly, but that sounds about right.

It has a nice deck layout for fishing. Good overall use of space. Good ride.

They extended the hull below the waterline at some point. Sounds like that move helped the boat's planing characteristics. I have heard people say that the 272 would want to fall off plane in heavy seas. Means you have to go a little faster than you would like to keep on plane. I'd have to agree with that assesment.

Thanks Dan. Interesting article. I will need to look closer to see if I agree. Will need to wait till April for any sort of sea trial.

J9f, my kids are small but I guess I should factor in them growing a little. Have you experienced the list that Pascoe mentions, or any of his other criticisms?

Thanks,
Dave

Seems like every time someone asks about a Sailfish, someone sends that link out.

It is an interesting read and he points out some good things to keep your eye out for. Some are major. Those I would be concerned about, others.... not so much. I don't see any major problems with my set-up. It certainly reads negatively, but it is the only "Pascoe" I have ever read, so I don't if I should walk away from that thinking I own a piece of junk or if he just pointed out some obvious flaws you should keep your eye out for.

I know one thing is for sure..... the article is more valuable to read than some magazine hype that only points out the positives and tells you only how great the boat is. The manufacturers do a good enough job promoting the upsides.

Pascoe has been debated for years. Look at the boat for yourself. I had a 97 272 Sailfish which was a well built, fine boat. They are very popular and not because they are inexpensive. As to your questions:

The ride is good. Not as good in a headsea as the deep V CCs, but way better stability. The cockpit is huge for this size boat at the expense of a small helm. The cabin is also large for a 27' boat. The biggest complaint from 282 owners I know of is the hardtop rod holders are hard to reach due to the raised hardtop. The fuel burn with 225EFI Yammies is about 22 GPH at 28-30 kts. A 12 hour gulfstream trip (60nm one way) usually burns 130-135g. The boat will only sleep 3 in the cabin while the Marlin can sleep 4.

I believe the GW Sailfish is one of the finest cabin boats in this size range. It was my first choice and would be so again. Others to check out are

Pursuit 28
Albemarle 28
BW 28
Scout 280

Look at the boat for yourself. Everyone makes their own opinions including pascoe. Both the 282 and the 272 are great boats. The 282 has been the top seller for Grady for the past few years. Awesome boat for the size! Great company, great boat, and great resale!
