Default 1993 Bayliner Classic - Underpowered??

I am looking at purchasing a 1993 Bayliner Classic 2859 and liked what I saw today. We took it for a run for a couple hours and everything was great however I am wondering if it is a bit underpowered. It has the 5.7l merc and it seemed sluggish. We had 7 people on board of which 5 were women. They were all at the back of the boat when we were cruising but we were only getting 12-13 knots at 4200rpm. The current owner couldn't tell me what the pitch was on the prop but it was not stainless.

Aside from dropping a 7.4l into the boat, what might be my options for squeezing another 6 or 8 knots out of her?

Thanks

Hodgey

Just put a supercharger on it. It'll fix that problem.

It make a big difference to have people get up front but the right prop is the ticket consider a double cup prop just ask for it when you get your prop rebuilt. Make sure your motor is tuned up and you should be fine under powered yea

That boat is underpowered, very common for those years of Bayliners. I had a 1994 23' w/a with a 235hp. After a couple of years I repowered to a 300hp and it made all the difference. I went from a cruise of 24mph / 3400rpm's / 2.25mpg to 29mph / 3250rpm's / 3.4mpg. IMO 5.7's do not need to be run at 4200rpm's except when verifying for proper prop. Personally I would not run 1 constantly above about 3500. That boat needs at least 320hp to perform properly. Michigan motorz has a sweet 6.3 liter/350hp/small block that would bolt right in for $9000. What outdrive does it have? Some will not handle the added hp.

Ppppfffftttt 7 people that's amatuer. That's not a party. This is a party. Like I said, supercharger And peel that pesky Coast Guard "Limit 8 Persons" sticker off so you can legally carry more people Had 16 aboard that day and it was a little tippy

That boat should only have been offered with a 7.4. A 5.7 just ain't going to cut it.

Very true!

But, as we all know, Bayliner's are price-point boats and therefore are mostly underpowered to keep the price down.

Most folks vote with their wallet and not their common sense.

Sad to say...

Hell yea I left the dock with all those people, 10 cases of beer and a couple bottles of liquor!

Everybody on board had either a case of beer of a bottle of liquor and a life jacket, so it was pretty safe.

The more the merrier!

Nice thing about those Ciera's was the high freeboard. More room between the gunnels and the water line to allow for extra loads like that
