good for them I was involved in a medical emergency off of PB county one time a couple of years ago. THe situation was that we came across a near drowning diver victim several miles from the nearest inlet. I called on ch16 to the PB county sheriff, since I knew that although they had the 2nd fastest boats around (customs has the Midnight Exp), they maintain a fast deployment 2 person crew. ANyway, it was a beautiful site to see one of their 30' center consoles ripping thru 4 foot seas at some 30kts to arrive at my emergency. NOthing against the USCG, but for "local" stuff, I'll call the sheriff's office first. They were great.
Actually, there was a second Sheriff/USCG incident I was party to. A 50' something boat fire occured a few miles offshore and I was first on scene. The USCG dispatched a 42' utility boat to the area, but they started some 12 miles away and showed up some 45 minutes after I did. THe US Customs arrived right behind me in a very fast boat, but they maintained a safe distance. Meanwhile, my crew on a POS 27' i/o was all over this burning boat, taking on the captain who jumped overboard due to the flames. THe PB county sheriff dispatched their aircraft who, at least initially, took control of the situation. Don't get me wrong, if I have a problem 30 miles offshore, I'm calling the USCG. All i'm saying is for stuff within their jurisdiction, start with the county people. |
