hello everybody - I have a question about insuring a trailer. I just bought a new, small trailer to put my layout (duck) boat on. The boat is 14 feet and has a 10 horse on it. I know I have to register this trailer, but do I have to insure it too? They require and RMV1 form to register it. Does that mean insurance? I'm confused. Any and all held appreciated.
Your insurance co. needs to stamp the RMV-1 showing that you have liability insurance in effect. You don't have to buy comprehensive[fire, theft, collision] only liability which is mandatory in Mass.

If you are pulling the trailer with an auto insured under a private passenger policy there is automatic liability coverage. Like was said above, just get your agent to fill out the insurance portion.
If you are pulling it with a comercially insured vehicle, there are some restrictions. If that's the case check with your agent.
thanks very much folks - Even though it does not need to be insured, it appears as though there is still an insurance hoop to jump through. Hopefully, I have all my ducks in a row. Thanks again.
A bit of history if you care. As I mentioned above there are some restrictions on trailers pulled behind commercially insured vehicles. What happened here in NC is that they used to not require insurance verification on trailers until there were some claims where the trailer wasn't covered because it was outside the restrictions being pulled behind a commercially insured vehicle. Instead of trying to figure out which did need to be specifically insured and which ones didn't they simply started requiring insurance verification on all trailers. May be what happened there as well.
Your best bet is to contact your state DMV and ask them. If you send them a letter or e-mail you will receive a written response which is much better than a verbal one.
As stated above, your insurance company has to "stamp" your registration form. This should not cost you anything more than an additional trip to the insurance company.
Shag....When did the liability requirement begin in NC? I own four licensed trailers, but have never had to prove any type of liability insurance proof in either Orange or Onslow Counties. Not trying to flame, but am curious. Thanx, Jim
