Default OMC Sea Drive Question

Does anyone know if you can remove a seadrive from its mount and put a regular OMC outboard in its place. The seadrive doesn't have such a good reputation, but it seems like an outboard in its place, especially with a full transom would work fine. What I mean by removing the seadrive is removing the motor only and mounting an outboard on the bracket that would be left.

One of the bracket companies made a special bracket for a full transom to replace the sea drive. Not sure which one.

I'VE NEVER SEEN A REGULAR OUTBOARD MOUNTED ON A SEA DRIVE, I HAVE SEEN A SEA DRIVE MOTOR PUT ON A REGULAR TRANSOM, BUT IT HAD THE MID SECTION SWITCHED. A SEA DRIVE WAS WHAT OMC CAME OUT WITH SO YOU CAN PUT AN OUTBOARD ON A BOAT WITH A FULL TRANSOM. BEFORE THE SEA DRIVE, THE ONLY WAY TO HAVE A FULL TRANSOM WAS TO HAVE AN INBOARD OR AN I/O. THE SEA DRIVE HAS A BAD REPUTATION. BUT THE REASON THEY STILL DON'T MAKE THEM IS BECAUSE PEOPLE LIKE ARMSTRONG CAME OUT WITH TRANSOM BRACKETS. SO YOUR BEST BET IS TO TAKE OFF THE SEA DRIVE. YOU WILL BE LEFT WITH A HOLE IN THE TRANSOM ABOUT THE SIZE OF A PLATE. YOU WOULD HAVE TO FILL THAT IN AND GET IT GLASSED AND GEL-COATED, THEN MOUNT A TRANSOM BRACKET. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY I HAVE EVER SEEN SEA DRIVES REPLACED WITH NORMAL OUTBOARDS.

Its possible with a ocean pro with a few mods!
but please dont bother
I know from painfull loss of Money$$$$$
to keep relics on the water!
I am as we speak removing all of the sea drive unit on a 23 sea Ox
and putting a D&D marine 6foot swim platform on
with bracket and kicker mount and dive ladder
you will save money in the long run
or you can buy my parts cause your gonna need um.

Bogart.

I have seen it done several time and think that it is a pretty good idea. Having said that, I would not bother to buy a new motor and try to attach it to that bracket. I would buy a used Evinrude/Johnson and then attach that to the bracket. The biggest problem is not the motor but the steering system in the bracket and the trim. If you can rig an external system for steering with your new used motor you will be much happier. The best bet is too remove the whole unit and install an Armstrong bracket and new motor but sometimes is just not worth it so thats why the used motor trick will get you back on the water at a quarter of the cost. Most mid 1990s OMC will bolt straight up, small V4 to small V4, small 2.6 liter V6 to the same and so one. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the replys, a used motor was what I was looking at. Doesn't seem like it would matter if its Armstrong or the seadrive bracket,if the motor will bolt up. The height should work and the steering would be an easy fix.
