If they are in the same condition the 261 would be my choice......more deadrise..more room...50 more gallons fuel...rated for 150 more HP and set up for twins....and maybe the best offshore hull Mako ever built.

There is one in Wilmington powered that way but I personally would want more...max HP is 400 and it is a heavy boat with 23* deadrise. I don't know the specifics on the boat I mentioned but I would imagine it is a real dog. That boat if rated today with the lighter smaller outboard 2 strokes would probably have a max of 500 HP

I don't have first hand experience with the 231, but I have a buddy who owns an '88 Mako 261. It's powered by a pair of '98 200 hp 'Rudes, and that thing will set your hair on fire.

Sweet boat!!

That 261 with 140's may be a little slow and it might not. I've ridden on one with 150's and it was not underpowered. ran mid to upper 40's and Ive ridden one with 200 yamahas and, as said, would set your hair afire. that boat is not a heavy boat. I seem to recall around 3500 lbs dry, thats light. And I must agree it is probably the best CC mako ever built.

No hands on with the 231 or 261 but my 252 loves the twin 200's.
