Default 2001 Yukon XL ABS problem

I was moving the boat this Saturday. The truck was running and I unhooked the wiring harness for the trailer. Drove home and later got in started up and ABS light was on. Cut the truck off and the ABS controlller was still running. I pulled the 60 A fuse to kill the ABS system. Stlill had brakes but no ABS and didn't want to run the battery down.

I took the Yukon to the dealer this AM. I am waiting for a call to see if the controller is fried.

My question are;

1. Did a make a mistake by unhooking with the truck running?
2. Has anyone had this problem and did GM cover it? My truck is barely out of date warrenty but less than 36,000 miles.
3. I have searched a little on google, seems that GM has had problems with the 2000 and 2001 ABS truck problems. What would you do if the cost to replace wasn't covered and it was $900.00.

Thanks for any suggestions.

You will have to deal with a GM dealership to get any factory support. Deal with the service director in the dealership and or the general manager. Do not hesitate to request assistance from the service district manager. I'll bet that you get partial if not 100% support. You need to get if fixed.

Update: just picked up the Yukon., even though it was out of warrenty, GM replaced the ABS control unit. $940.00

Thanks for a good dealer.

Still wondering if unplugging the trailer connector while the circuit was hot did something to the electrical. (spike or something)

What does the ABS controller sound like? I was taking my boat to storage and noticed what sounded like a small electric motor whining under the truck, is that the controller/module?

I have an '01 XL and had to have the ABS module replaced at 85K miles for about the price you quoted. I talked with GMC and had the dealer on my side, but due to the mileage they were unwilling to provide any financial help. Not very happy! Especially since they have provided me with financial relief, in the past, after I had to have the rear rotors and pads replaced due to a weak spring and clip used to keep the pads off of the rotors broke. My research showed they "redesigned" the part ( they used a heavier spring and clip ) and published an advisory to the GMC service departments.

Motivator, that is exactly what it sounds like. I am not sure how it works, but it is hot all the time. The relay only works when the key is on.

At first, I thought is might be a fuel pump (kinda sounded like it). Pulled the fuse and that wasn't it. LOL

Finally, pulled the master ABS fuse and it cut off (after snooping around for an hour and almost killing the battery) I ain't no mechanic.

Motivator, not to turn this into a car forum, but did you get the fan put in the HVAC? Seems mold can build up and cause a funky smell. The fan blows when excess moisture is detected. Kinda weird to walking by a non running truck and a fan starts runnning.

That's a new one on me. Unfortunately, the one person I trusted at my local dealership is no longer with them so I have no one to even ask. One thing I do is to run the A/C year round, with the auto climate control I just set the temp and keep it there. So far so good (92K).

I did have a Volvo V70 wagon that did just that, you would be working in the yard and all of a sudden the A/C would just come on. It mainly happened after driving it, but there were instances when it would come on just out of the blue.

As far as any smell is concerned, I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary, but then again with a five year old who has grown up in the truck I would be hard pressed to smell anything except dropped french fries and chicken nuggets.

Know what you mean about the kids. I thought kids were good at messing up a car, I'll be darned if they can't mess up a boat too.

nccoaster; Unpluging or not had nothing what-so-ever to do with your abs module failure. I've changed hundreds of them on 99-04 GM c and k trucks. The trailer lamps ore on completly seperate circuts. These units are made by Kelsey-Hayes and have not been very reliable. I keep waiting for a recall but it has not happened yet. What the sad part is, a lot of people pay for this repair out of their own pocket.

I fried my Durango's ABS module after soaking the trailer with lights hooked up (twice) I already know I'm an idiot so no need to pile it on. In my defense, I only put in & out once a year. Clearly the substance abuse in my formative years is manifesting itself in these lapses.

capt esquare, sounds like you know a lot.

Ok, unhooking with the with the truck running and lights on has no effect.(seperate cricuits) What about Ozzie dunking the trailer with the lights on? I did that too. SOMETHING casued the ABS system to fry and it happened right after or during the pulling my boat.

Or is it just coincidence???

By the way, if soaking a trailer with the lights on can fry the ABS, what are you supposed do at night. Pain in the #$% to remember to unhook the lights.

GM, knows they have a problem (they fixed mine). But Motivator had to pay for his. Not fair.

In going back through my records, my ABS module failed at 78K miles. At the time my service rep advised me the vehicle's brakes would perform normally, except I would not have ABS. Since my wife is the primary driver of the vehicle and she normally has my son with her my only options were replace the module or purchase a new vehicle ( she already had the new one picked out, if only getting her to agree on a new boat were this easy ). It's funny, the only time I have ever heard the whining of the module was when I was towing the boat.
Should the additional weight of a 19ft boat cause the module problems?
I can only wonder what will happen when I purchase my next boat, currently looking for a 24-26ft center console. Considering I only tow my boat about 100 miles a year I would think a Yukon XL would be plenty enough vehicle. Any thoughts?
