Default Factory & Extended Warrenty

My buddy just purchased a used boat and the previous owner had an extended warrenty on the motor and drive. He said the warrenty states he must do maintance on the engine every 100 hours or void the warrenty. He was told this could run him in the neighborhood of $450.
This coming Thursday I will be closing on a 21 ft CC with a 150 on the back. I can't decide if I am going to go with a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke, all depending if I could afford the 4 stroke. I was wondering would the 4 stroke make that much of a difference money is tight now and also the big question.... if I changed the oil in the lower unit, the plugs and inpella myself and keep the receipts if something goes wrong would I still be covered under the warrenty. Thank's

factory warranty - probably ,if you did all that was required on the suggested items in the manual.

Extended warr - probably, if written by the mfr - if it's by somebody else watch out - they are pretty squirrly...

This is a hard question to answer. When we have a vehicle, (water or land based), under a warranty or an extended warranty we have all the service performed by the authorized dealer. If something should go wrong, there is a paper trail of the service and the products used in the service process. This puts you, the customer on a safer ground! In addition, you have a dealer that sees you as a customer, who will work with you when it come to present your case to the factory. Our boat has a MerCruiser drive train. We have an outstanding dealer and he knows that we purchase all of our boating needs from him. --------Just my opinion. -----Greg

With all of the new vehicles I've owned (motorcycles & cars) I've always done the routine maitenance myself. Never, never, ever has a dealer questioned me when it came time for a warranty repair. This is my first new boat, and I intend to apply the same methods. Anything I can do myself, I will. It's always better to bring a warranty repair back to the original dealer. They usually take care of their own. Since he bought the boat second hand, this might not apply. Routine maintenance is exactly that, ROUTINE.
