Default SaltWater Series II - Best Motor

In my opinion the Yamaha Saltwater Series 2 Motors were some of the best outboard motors ever built. I have seen a pair of 225s with more than 2000 hours and no rebuild used in saltwater and tormented and not one problem. I have seen a pair of 250s at a dealership with 2300 hours and had only had annual service twice with no problems whatsoever. I have seen many early 90s V-6 OMC motors fail but some are still up there. I am very dissapointed that the HPDI motors from Yamaha took the SWS2 spot. There have been several recals with these motors. That is just what I think. I want to know what other members think and what theyre favorite motors are? Thanks

I'm betting my 1995 Saltwater 150's will go better than 2500 hours before I'll really have to consider a repower. I just feed them right and don't run around even close to WOT. Running at 4000-4300 rpms seem comfortable for all three of us!

I have a 2001 model 150 sws. Yamilube and ring free keep it running smooth, only problem was a thermostat took me 10 minutes to change. The power is incredible for a 150, gets me up on plane in 4 seconds.

I troll at least 24 hrs a week, providing the weather allows me. I just think they need an even more improved version.

I agree. I have a 1997 SSII. Have used it for 5 years and never been left stranded, never had it not start at the ramp. Always runs strong. I still take it 50+ miles offshore. I've had to do the t-stats and the poppit valve, and O2 sensor. Thats not bad for 5 years service.

If Yamaha's current offering can reach the same level of customer confidence the owners of the SWSII had/have, they'll be in great shape. My unscientific research backs up your post 100%. I run rendezvous' and fishing tournaments for a boat mfg. Satisfaction level of Yamaha SWSII owners = VERY high. Newer brands of motors - high

Hi from rushman,

They are great motors, And I believe that the F225 are following in there footsteps. I have put on 275 hours since the beginning of March. Friday I ran 215 miles to an under water moutain. 9feet of swell 3ft of waves at 60 degrees to the swell,15knots of wind.

Motors have never missed a beat. Cruise at 29 knots 80 liters fuel per hour if only the fishing was worth it.

regards rushman

As a '97 250hp Ox66 owner, I concur.

These motors are great and I shutter to think how many problems the HPDI's have given people.

Nothing's perfectm you know. I had an early 250 SWSII that I put 700 hours on with no problems whatsoever except for a bad oxygen sensor. But then I got a new boat with a pair of them and one blew a hole in a piston at 20 hours and had to have a new powerhead. I repowered that boat eventually with the 250 HPDIs when they came out at the end of 2002 and they are a vast improvement in every way, now having 400 trouble-free hours. Obviously not everyone is having the same experience. These message boards have a way of distilling down what is happening out there and distorting the perceptions we have of the proportion of people who have serious problems. I would guess that if there had been heavy internet usage when the EFI OX66 was introduced in 1997, the boards would have been filled with people having their oxygen sensors fail and you would not have put up a post about what wonderful, reliable motors they were (which they were indeed).

For proven long term reliability, IMHO, there is no better than the OX66 Yammie.
