Default Can you add your company's name to a yacht and call it your own product?

any boating companies out there that take one company's product and slap a different brand name on it?

used to build electronics for one of the largest company's in america and they would market other company's products as their own.

My guess is that most boat manufacturers would love it if you first would buy say a couple of thousand of their new boats. Once they got the cash I don't think they would especially mind if you changed the name and resold them. After all you do own all of those boats now. Remember, cash is king.

Here's my take on this: Sure if there is differences between the two products. Whether the differences being cosmetic, quality or design, but there has to be differences. Also one would have to come up with a contractual agreement with the builder.

They can only do this if they have an agreement with the manufacturing company. It's called a private label agreement. Otherwise, to buy product and put your own label on it as if you made it is illegal. Chances are that the marketing of the other company's electronic products as their own was done under a private label agreement.

I doubt that Viking would say that they 'slap their name on it' but I just spent a nice weekend in Newport on a Viking 46 Sport Crusier. Had some mechanical problems and started going through the manuals. Kept seeing the name Princess on the documentation so I asked my friend (the owner) about it. He told me that Pricess Yachts builds the boat to Viking's specs and it's sold as a Viking.

After I saw your question I popped over to Princess's site and sure enough they've got boats that look very much like the Viking.

And of course you have the GM of the boat world, Genmar. My aquasport 215 and the Wellcraft 20' walkaround are nearly identical. Same parent company obviously but clearly a 're-branding' of a boat.

I seriously doubt that. Its a big difference to own multiple boat companies and make similar product, but your asking if say CEO of company "X" wants to buy boat "Y" and then have their company name on the product, do not think so, unless they had some sort of agreement, or unless they were being manufactured for you to sell, under your brand name.
