Default Gasoline Geiser

I was using cans to fill my fairly new Grady 228 when the hose filled up like it was full, only I knew it only had a half a tank. I had time to pull the spout out and then gas just erupted from the tank. It probably was a 6-8 inch high stream before I grabbed the cap and tried to cover the hole and then it quit. I got the cap mostly on and grabbed a rag to wipe myself off when I heard air being forced out of the cap again. Probably half a gallon of gas in the canal and a a cup or two in the boat.

What do you guys think, vent problem, bad angle on the lift, slow rate of fill with cans. How are these tanks baffled and can something with that make a "burp"

A second vote for the vent SYSTEM. There may be some obstruction in the vent line, or the vent itself.

Isn't the vent in the fill? If you poured enough fuel into the filler, it may have poured into the vent as well, preventing the air from escaping from the fuel already in the fill hose.

My previous boat would burp gas out of the vent so much I used a Davis catch bottle. The fill dumped into the top of the poly tank and caused the fuel to foam and geiser out as well.

I would check the vent system first. The screen on my vent periodically crusts over with salt.

Had something similar happen on my 23ft. wellcraft. Could not fill it up at a gas station. Gasoline kept pouring out fill. Turned out the inside of the fill hose had collapsed.

I had a similar problem one time. I had a feeling it was the vent line, so I disconnected it at the tank, hooked up an air line and blew it clear. About a half cup or so of gas blew from the line, probably from the anti-siphon loop.
