Default New Mako 171

Hi, has anyone attached a "kicker" outboard to this hull? What size and how attached, as the transon cutout allows just enough room for the 115 Merc and linkage?

Also, what is the quickest, least troublesome way to remove what appears to be an oil slick stain at the water line on the transom, acquired no doubt by idling too long at the float?

Thanks, Joc

Default RE: New Mako 171

Not sure why anyone would want a kicker on this boat. Kickers are usually for two things: 1. Trolling at slow speeds to avoid fouling up the plugs on the prime engine, or 2. Safety - a "get home" engine.

The most common and useful engines for that hull -- (I had one for 6 years) are a 90 or 115hp. Both engines troll great at lower RPMs without fouling the plugs. I slowed trolled for king mackerel off of NC for years with a 90hp Yamaha.

At the same time, these engines are super reliable -- don't see the need for reason #2.

If you use the boat for fishing -- the best thing you can do is add a bow mounted electric trolling motor.

As far as removing the stain -- try Softscrub followed by some gentle rubbing compound if necessary.

Good Luck,
