Default 1995 Johnson 88hp SPL

I have a Johnson motor that my console guage warns me is hot after running above 5000 rpm for a few minutes or so. The water coming out of the motor is cold? Anyone know the reasons this would happen? The warning goes off after some cruising at 4000 rpm though...

could be the thermostats arent opening up all way, or water pump impeller is bad.

hard to tell for sure without doing head temperature checks. Your dealer sells melt sticks that the head temp should run in between (melt one, but not the other) when hot . get them and follow directions. If you have good pressure, then thermostats are likely the problem. when was the last time changed? the thermostats on that motor are kinda difficult to get to I believe.
