Default Tragic Accident Coming in Jupiter Inlet

It can happen at any time. Photo's incredibly capture the accident of the captain falling from the bridge, impacted by a large wave broadside. Other news reports say he suffered a broken neck, ribs, water in lungs and remains in critical condition on life support. I was listening to CH16 as the accident unfolded. First mate was below and managed to respond and bring the boat outside the bar to safety. Let's pray for the Captain's full recovery.

Holy crap! I've seen that boat dozens of times.
Hope he's ok.
He's in our prayers.

That's amazing with a broach as bad as that was, that no one else was hurt.

wiseass! (lol).

1. Is it me but the pics almost look like illustrations?
2. How'd the photographer happen to shoot this boat at that second in multi frame mode or was it a video?
3. Incredible shots (timing). I didn't even know a boat that size could list that far in less than crazy/major storm seas.

Hope dude is ok.

Wow that is nasty. I hope for a fast recovery for the Capt.. The mate needs a ata boy for jumping in and taking control of the helm and keeping customers safe and saving the boat.

The big Earl swell yesterday made the Jupiter Inlet outer bar look like “bonzai pipeline.” There were photographers on the beach from the surfing mags taking pictures of the surfers.

I did not and do not think that a captains reputation is at stake. Those seas and I do know how bad Jupiter inlet can get, especially for small boats. I have been in and out of 20 different FL inlets. Those seas do not look big enough to lay a boat that size over on its side? And of all the big boats I have run, I did not know you could lay a boat over that far and recover? Why is know No one asking that question? I hope the captain recovers fully that was scary. Maybe its the boat design fault if we are blaming anyone? or jupiter inlet.

I've never owned, or captained a boat that large, BUT I'm curious as to how ANYONE can recover a boat like that from that much list?!?
Looks like a salvage.

tough inlet, hope capt recovers...boat was clearly broadside to the waves, and is very tall/topheavy...sandbar is only 3ft deep on low tide, and he was clearly in the seafoam there

he hit the gunnel very hard as boat righted itself...doesnt look good

The sea conditions were actually very smooth but with a large swell from Earl. It made the inlet a little hairy but should have been no problem for that boat. 51' Garlington I believe. For all we know he yelled "Hold on everyone here comes a big one" and forgot to hold on himself. Lot of centrifugal force up that high.

I saw an almost identical near accident happen. Friend's boat, 24 Grady, behind me returning from the Bahamas entering Fort Pearce inlet in breaking waves. On my 28 Bertram I had to steer with the throttles, nearing cruise RPM on one while idled on the other. Very tricky situation. His Grady went broadside and the outriggers tips were what seemed like only a few feet from the water. Kids all slid to one side and nearly went swimming. Dangerous conditions for bow-steering deep vee hulls in following seas.

A 61 YO commercial captain trying to make a living.

Or maybe a 61 YO commercial captain who tried to make a living on a day he shouldn't have? Probably done it hundreds of times, only it didn't work out too well this time ...

For everyones info, although it was a terrible accident, the ocean itself was flat........beyond the breakers.Sounds like bad timing since the sets are very predictable...Ofcourse we wish him a speedy recovery, if it's possible.
This is the jupiter inlet about 20 minutes after the reported incident took place.
