Default 1989 Searay 190 BR

know someone who is selling a boat with no asking price (just make an offer) and I am trying to figure out what would I should offer (and wether it is worth it).

The boat is a 1989 Searay 190 BR with the optional 5.7L V8 I/O motor. It isn't in running condition due to a cracked block and it also needs a new propeller. It comes with a tandem trailer but the frame is rusted and is need of a good sandblasting and paint application. It also has one of the fender's damaged.

In the short term, I am not looking to buy a boat (perhaps in the next 5 years), but I definatly would be interested in a cheap project boat that I can fix up and enjoy for many years.

So any clue on what I should offer?

Don't bother. Book value on that boat is about $3000.00 in running condition. You can buy a complete boat of that age for less than it will cost you to put a new engine in that one.

A rebuilt long block can be had for about $1200 but the boat will likely need lots more stuff to make it reliable/safe. And if it has an OMC cobra outdrive it will be very expensive to keep running.

If the boat is in great shape, no soft spots in the floor and the seats etc. don't have tears, and the boat has a Mercruiser engine/drive it could be a good deal if you can get it for $1000 or less but you would need to be able to do all the work yourself to make it cheaper than buying a running boat.

Deals like this can ruin a freindship if it goes bad.

I agree. I believe that model is called the "Seville." You can search Craigslist and see that these boats are fairly inexpensive to buy in running condition. Without seeing it, but knowing it needs and engine, I'd be hard pressed to pay more than $500 knowing that I could buy one in decent running condition for not a lot more.

Use this tool to easily search for used boats
. You can select "Sea Ray" from the "model" drop-down box and put "Seville" in the search field.

I think that Tipsy is being very generous with his pricing guess. In my opinion, spending for an engine R&R, you KNOW that the outdrive will need work, the trailer replacement (you can not...fix rust).

All that would cost twice what boats like that are worth. This is a boat that you'd be doing the guy a favor by hauling it off for him.

That was basically my point. I guess Bamaboy said it better

If the boat was in PRISTINE condition (always garaged and looking nearly new) then maybe I'd pay $500 knowing it needs and engine and trailer.

If it's anything less than pristine, I agree, you can do your buddy a favor by offering to take it off his hands for free. You're not going to get this thing in reliable running condition for less than what it would cost to buy one that's already in good running condition.
