Random Quote: I still miss my ex , but my aim is getting better !!
Email received that motor was complete and ready to ship.
Was informed that there was a crack in the Exhaust Manifold Plate / Adapter that was the culprit.
I am being billed $317 for the part and $17 for shipping.
They also stated that they replcaced the rod and main bearings and all gaskets and seals at no cost.
I feel that they should have caught this initially and I have reservations as to the necessity to have to pay additional $$ after already paying $5500 for the reman
BUT A1 has agreed to pay my shop 4 hours of labor to derig, crate, and rerig motor as well as shipping both ways via fedex. If they make good on that i dont have any problem paying for the exhaust manifold as the only casuality will be an additional 3 weeks lost of the season.
I too hope all this works out for you, but it sounds too much like what I went through. When I got my motor back the second time from them it had the same old power pack and stator that Jr. insisted was the cause of my poor idle, missing and stalling. That was after paying another $700.00 for these parts to be replaced.
When I re-installed the motor it didn't run one bit better. Further inspection revealed they never bored my motor the first time they had it.
The list of old worn out parts re-used on my motor was pathetic compared to what they promise in their ads.
Maybe I'm wrong here, but I don't think so. If I were to buy a motor that had been "remanufactured", in particular the powerhead, I would EXPECT that when I received the motor, all I would have to do is hang it, rig it, and run it. No adjustments, no carb cleaning, no replacing hardware or finding replacements for hardware that was omitted during reassembly, NOTHING! That would be my agreement with the remanufacturer from the get go, or my business would go elsewhere...
I also know that if my business' reputation was being dragged through the mud repeatedly on the world's most influential boating forum, I would come to the conclusion that there is something I"M doing wrong, and I need to fix it...
Mike, you make good points. Like any major purchase, a buyer's due diligence goes a long way. If you read the information in A1's website you are lead to believe that you are getting a ''better'' than new motor. They tout their ''diamond precision computer controlled hones'' as if they are the only ones in the world that use them.
If a rebuild is done right there is no reason that it should not last as long as an OEM motor. It is obvious from the numerous complaints that this company receives that they are hacks!
There is a right way and a wrong way to handle an unhappy customer, A1 chooses not to handle them at all, it appears.
Playing devil's advocate and giving A1 the benefit of the doubt only helps A1. If you sold boats that had as many problems as this company's rebuilds and then chose to handle your unhappy customers the way they do then you would be the one getting flamed all over the internet.
You obviously don't run your business like this and therefore don't have the problems or reputation that this outfit does.
David,
Many years ago there was alot of money to be made, ALOT OF MONEY, shipping some brands of outboard motors, new, in the box, at about dealer cost, plus freight. The annual rebate from the engine manufacturer when volume levels were reached, was very rewarding. The motors carried the full manufacturers warranties no matter where they were shipped domestically. So, a guy in California could buy a motor in a box from a dealer in Miami and have the full warranty on the outboard from the engine manufacturer, at his local dealers shop. Now, to make all of this work profitably, it would be required for a dealer to warehouse perhaps a seven figure outboard motor inventory, and be damn sure he was going to sell and ship them. I knew some dealers that did so and made a whole bunch of money doing it until the engine manufacturers discontined the program. Good deal for the buyer, good deal for the dealer who sold the motor. A Win-win for all concerned.
My opinion, thought must be given as to the end user and warranty, and warranty service. With the above mentioned, no sweat, new motor, full manufacturers warranty, no matter where so long as it was US Of A.
The key words here, in my opinion, "warranty" and "local".
New, reman, used, no matter, the key words, to me, are still pretty important.
Just my thoughts and the world I live in.
I think the problems go far more to the logistics involved than the honesty of the dealership. I truly do not believe there's an honesty or integrity issue here. In my view the potential problems, the for certain problems, are quite clear from the get go and there is no question as to if there are going to be problems, you can count on them. I can very clearly see the nightmare in dealing with them, both the dealer and the customer.
I do not think there's an honesty issue here. Logistics, tempers, hassles, maybe some abusive language, perhaps both sides? Yeah, for certain. Honesty? No, I dont see it that way.
Mike, I have always respected the way you carry yourself online and your insider perspective on these issues.. You use your name and you don't have to be around here long to know what you do. I do understand you are on A1's side of the fence.
You could not be more wrong on this one however. I have been an Automotive Technician since 1983. My motor blew up in June of 06.
I found low compresion on #2 hole, pulled that head and found piston, head and cylinder wall damaged.
I talked to local shops about overhaul and both of the places I trusted were swomped.
Like most of A1's victims I found them online and fell for their BS hype. They are very slick on the phone too, tell you everthing you want to hear. They make even more promises there about quick turnaround, their motors are even better than new B/C they are pre-run and verified good.
These logistics you speak of were minimalized B/C I did my own R&R. Once they get your motor they got you. I sent my motor and they sat on it for two weeks. When I finally got it back and re-installed it, it ran like crap and was leaking water from the voltage regulator.
Mike Sr. said it was normal to run bad while breaking in and continue to run it. As the condition only worsened (miss, stall, coughing) I checked compresion and found low uneven #'s.
I talked to Mike Jr. and he said I must be doing something wrong or my gauge was bad. I persisted and he agreed the readings were not normal.
I yanked the powerhead back off, by now I was getting good at it.
This time I decided I would be patient and let them take their time and maybe they would get it right. WRONG!
After several weeks Dawn calls and says your motor is ready, Stator and Powerpack were bad pay $700.00 and we will ship, asked to speak to Mike Jr. and he says " your power pack and stator were bad". I asked about the compresion and he said they had 110 psi on all 6 cylinders.
Reluctantly paid because I wanted my motor back. When it came back it had the same old power pack and stator on it.
When I re-installed motor it didn't run one bit better. Same low uneven compresion #'s.
When I finally took it to local mechenic we found the same scoring on cylinder #2 that caused me to send it to them in the first place.
At this time I asked for a refund. They said send the motor back again.
I said you must be kidding.
I filed suit there in his County. I lost because I breached contract by having third party fix the motor. Their warranty is very carefully worded.
I would have had to keep sending my motor back for the entire lenght of the warranty. The Judge wanted them to give me something because he believed they hadn't bored my motor. A1 gave me $1000.00 for the old block. I had to pay $500.00 to Mechenic back home for core charge. So out of the $5000 paid to them I got $500.00 back.
The judge told me "unfortunately there is not a law against doing really crappy work".
I'm in the business of selling boats that primarily are new. Some used as well. My job has me doing this all over the world. And I sell a lot of boats, a whole lot of boats, new and used, and ship world wide. I comment on THT and other sites as to my product, any issue, but never solicit, never.
I'm not commenting on the issues being posted. I know nothing about them and dont presume, nor wish to comment as to merits one way or the other.
What I will say is that buying a used outboard motor, reman or not, is still buying a used outboard motor. It's a used outboard motor. Some have a lot of use, others maybe not. Some lots of salt, others maybe not. In any event, it's a used outboard motor.
Ok, next step, we crate it, ship it maybe a thousand miles (if domestic), rig it and assume all is well? It's a used outboard and all is most likely not going to be well. Would you think otherwise?
Now, there then exsists a logistics nightmare. Shipping a five or six hundred pound outboard back and forth, the rigging, derigging, rerigging, all that's involved can be a tremendus job and hassle, and extremly expensive and time sensitive.
It looks to me that first the buyer should consider buying a used outboard motor under all of these circumstances. It looks to me that a legitimite arguement can be made both ways. It looks like there are two sides to the stories.
If a company, any company, chooses to be in the business of selling used boats and outboard motors, there will be, not maybe, there will be issues. It looks like A1 is trying to resolve them but also in saying that, the customers chose to buy a used outboard motor by mailorder. I promise you the odds of the used motor being rigged and run out with no issues are remote. Then begins the logistics, hassles, and issues involved.
In my case, I will not, ever, sell and deliver a used boat and motor without the customer, domestic or export, first having it checked by a representitive of theirs if they cant do it themselves. I insist on it. I dont have problems, dont want any.
Ok, I'm in the business and have a view that might very well not be shared by many.
I would buy a boat or motor from your in the blink of an eye, because you are on here and you don't have people calling you out for poor work left and right. This guy has his own rep and I desided not to do business with him just because of what I read on this site, and a few others posted on this site.
If you say I am going to do xyz then you need to do xyz, no need to lie about it. Do the job your being paid for and move on the the next person. If someone is unhappy make them happy. If you do your job correct the customer will more than likely be happy, not always but most of the time. I know first hand I dealt with 4-5000k customers per year with my last business and out of that 5-10% were unhappy and would call me, email the business or tell an employee. I would deal with it whatever it was. Some lady dropped her camera off the side of the boat and was pissed, and she wanted us to pay up for it. It was in no way shape or form our fault that she could not hold onto her camera but she wanted to start yelling and freaking out. So I said how much was the camera worth... then the scam part comes out $1500.... Right lady look this is what I will do for you, I will refund you and your 4 guest $325 total amount, and throw in a free $100 dollar gift card to the seafood joint, and give your 2 kids t-shirts. She shut up, took the refund, wiped the tear from her eye cracked a smile and told us how great we were and blah blah blah.. Sure that 100$ gift card cost me 50 bucks because I knew the owners well, the tshirts cost me 5 each, and the refund hurt, but it did not cost me more than 25$ worth of fuel for her family to be on my boat so I lost the money from the sale but I was not out of pocket much on the sale. In total this lady was happy and it cost me about $85. How many people do you think she sent me? I don't know but the next day she came back with her family total of (5) and their friends were in town (6 more) and they all spent the max amount of money they could at my business. They paid for the high rides, and t-shirts, disposiable cameras, the works.... and paid me around $880+ tax. They were happy, I was happy.
Its not the mistakes you make, its all how you handle it. I ran a parasail business where people can die, and it was my job to make them happy and keep them alive. The amount of stress that can come out of this is huge, and the amount of money involved is also huge. Happy people make the stress level go down for all of the employees, and they keep people coming back and giving your business word of mouth business.
No advertisment can beat word of mouth business, no advertisement can fix getting bashed by negitive comments. The only way to fix it is to make the person whole, or make them think that they are whole.
Sorry for the long story but that is a real story, its the truth and it shows how good customer service not only stops the bleeding from a unhappy person, but shows how you can take a loss and turn it into a profit simply by doing the right thing.

Yours is a very intense and convincing arguement. It carries alot of credability because your a "wrench", which I have a lot of respect for, maybe because I was one, that's how I started in the industry.
My opinions are very tempered due to the subject of used, reman'd, outboard motors. Used outboard motors are a pain in the ass an awful lot of the time. In buying a used, reman'd, outboard consideration should be given as to subsequent service needs, warranty or not. For that matter, a new one as well. I just have a hard time understanding why some one would purchase a used motor, shipped in a box, perhaps one thousand miles away? My mind, and I dont care if it's an excellant shop, doe's excellant work, there's going to be subsequent issues. It's the nature of the beast, particularily if the motor has a salt water history.
The same would apply, for example, with a FORD engine. Your choice, a reman with a warranty good at any authorize dealer, but you'll pay more. An engine purchased at a shop where you'll have no reasonable expectation of good service/warranty, due to perhaps a one thousand mile distance issue.
My employment makes me pay a lot of attention to service, warranty or not. I cannot see any possibility of what I would consider good service given the mail order nature. If the dealer is guilty or innocent I have no idea, nor is it my affair. I question the wisdom of the excercise in the first place. It's going to be very tough to keep satisfied customers given the nature of the transactions. I dnt see how it can be done without a lot of complaints.
I learned a lot with this experience and as they say hindsight is 20-20. A new 30" 225 or larger outboard was not in the budget. In the end I payed another $5000 to have the motor done correctly and it runs very well to this day(knock on wood). As you basically said MC there is no substition for good local service. I will end with one more cliche' "You get what you pay for".

Bob,
Lets talk.
The people who build outboard motors, all of which say that theirs is the best, every one of them say that, yes?
It's just been in the very recent years that a warranty exceeding sixty months would be offered. The price charged for a used outboard extended warranty, was some pretty serious jingle. Do we agree?
Now, the guys who build the motors, all saying theirs is the best, would for years, only warrant the product for sixty months, and they build the damn things. Doe's that send a message?
The extended warranties were always quite expensive, particularily for a salt water outboard.
So, the guys who build the motors, all of them the "best" outboard money can buy, offered no more than sixty months.
The odds makers, the extended warranty underwriters, would go longer for some pretty serious bucks.
So, the guys that build them, and the extended warranty companies are in agreement on the issue. Lets go on the premise they have a pretty good idea as to what they're talking about.
Ok, now we're to accept that an outboard shop is doing a reman on the same vintage outboards as discussed, maybe ten years old, who knows, and all is jolly?
Why do I have a problem with that?
Why do I think there's going to be issues? Complaints? Particularily from perhaps a thousand miles away.
I'm not being critical of the shop, their honesty or their integrity.
I think it's a mission impossible without plenty of problems.
If an individual consumer can best the odds, well, good for him or her. But the odds are clearly stacked against it.
Maybe I misread this .. They warranty for sixty months or six months.. I would think anyone that builds a used motor that turns 5 to 6 thousand rpms and would warranty more than a few months would be asking for a bad rep.. If you understand motors then we both know anything used as hard as they are can come part ..

Perhaps I didn't make my point very well.
It's just in very recent years a new outboard motor manufacturer would warrant the product they build for longer than sixty months, five years.
The extended warranty companies would pick up additional, but very expensive.
The people who build the motor and the insurance companies underwriting the extended warranties are in agreement as to how long it's feaseable to offer a warranty on an outboard, for how much money.
Thus, I go wth their odds.
Dealing with an older outboard, dont much care about how good the reman shop, there's going to be issues, complaints.
If the guys who build them wouldn't do it, and the aftermarket companies would charge handsomely to do it, why then would one think they know more as to the outboard than the guys who build them and the insurance companies that underwrite the extended warranties?
My point goe's to an older outboard and the odds of selling them without a pretty heavy complaint load. I dont think it possible. What makes it even more impossible, my view, is to put the motor in a box and send it to a consumer.
I dont think it's an honesty or integrity issue.
I have no idea satisfied customers vs dis satisfied, but the clear odds to me is there will be unhappy customers given the entire scenerio

I guess that was the honesty and integrity I was looking for also. You see I owned to local jewelry stores here in Lakeland for over 10 years. We had glitches from manufacturer's and so on. I have received Diamonds late that were suppose to be ready on that day for engagement parties. I have paid for plane tickets for a seat for a piece of jewelry to arrive so that customers would not be disappointed on their big day. I have sat in airports all night long to get the piece of jewelry after the plane was late due to snow storms, then hired a limo and a dozen roses on my own dime to have the ring delivered. Expensive pieces had gotten lost in the mail, I replaced them with my own monies. I know things happen it is how you handle them afterwards. What is happening to this country where people feel they can hide behind a website and that they have no responsibility for what they do, always wanting to play the blame game. Just try to run an honest business, because I believe that karma will come around and get you. All I want to do is go spend time with my grandson, go fishing with my husband, try and get a little piece of enjoyment in this life. But it really is sad that a person like Mike is constantly stealing the joy out of peoples lives by not standing up like a man and taking responsibility. There is really to much hate in this world going around..... We tried to be patient, because we did not want what happened to happen. We tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. Really and truly I have never been cussed at in my life as to when you call A1 by there whole staff. You see I have not stopped answering my phone, reading my emails - Pamela Lee is my real name. I have nothing to hide in this situation. I just hope and pray that by next week or even by the close of today this will just be just one more nightmare that has been put to rest. Thanks Again for listening
How did you find out about this website Pamela, and how did you know that A1 was on here? Is it on their own website, or in their advertisement somewhere?
With your post count I can see your some what new here and I want to ask you a question that I want you to honestly answer.
Do you feel that A1 outboards represents this site (The Hull Truth) as in, when A1 does bad by you does that relfect a negitive image of this site to you?

Mike,
What you are saying, in effect, is that a used motor, regardless of whether is just used, with maybe a lower unit servicing and a compression check, or rebuilt, where cylinder honing has been done, new pistons installed, crank re-ground, new bearings, new flywheel, etc., is basically a crapshoot? I disagree. Used is used, re-built is re-built. Big difference, and I would expect a re-build to come with a warranty, at least 6 mos. Used? No warranty, I can buy a used outboard off my neighbor...
I'm wondering how you could possibly come to the conclusion that this is not a honesty or integrity issue.
Bustedflat clearly stated that he was told that the cause of his motor running poorly was a bad Stator and Powerpack. He paid $700 to have them replaced. When his motor was returned, it had the same old parts on it, not the new parts he paid $700 for.
I think we all understand your view of buying outboards through mailorder as a bad idea and that the whoever does that should expect some kind of problem right out of the box, so to say. I agree with Seabob in that that should be the rare exception (not the norm as it seems in this case) but that's not the arguement.
If somebody charges you for new parts and doesn't put them on your motor, THAT IS AN HONESTY AND INTEGRITY ISSUE.

. I found out about this website after I googled all his names for his business and the hull report showed up, but this is not the only site he is being talked about on I had to subscribe to 11 sites and all 11 sites are having the same discussion about A1. No by all means this site has been great as a matter of fact I will copy and paste what I just wrote to another member on his pm :
Thank you so much for everything. And no I am not sorry I had to join this club I have learned a whole lot and talked to some very knowledgeable people along the way. You see we will not quit boating and we will somehow get back up and running and on the water and I am sure at some point I will have some good news to tell even if it is not about A1 thanks again. So you see I love this site. We are avid boaters and are aware that motors have problems and we are always looking for knowledgeable people who know better than us. My husband always has me on the web looking for parts and what not regarding boating. So in no way does Mike's bad actions reflect this site.
I by all means didnt read all this BUT I did see people arguing that a rebuild isnt like a factory motor and will have issues/problems/wont last as long.
Maybe I am wrong since I have never needed a rebuild BUT from my car/street racing days, my rebuild/custom motors built by hand could take a ton of abuse and run perfect. I guess I almost feel the opposite, shouldnt a hand build motor be just like a new motor, probably even better?

well that clear's that up
I figured I would ask because to me if I went to xzy website and someone was selling items or a service on that site, and I got screwed by said person I would think it was part of the website. I know how it works around here, but if I was new and not very PC or internet savy I would not know the difference between the website and the company selling services. Does that make sense?
But I am glad you don't think that everyone on here are D bags because of the way you were treated by the company.
Most (not all) but most everyone on here including the mods are pretty good people, and will point people in the right direction.
