Default World Cat Vs. Jupiter

I've narrowed my search down to an '04 Jupiter 31FS with Yami FS 225's and an '07 World Cat 270 TE with a pair of Honda 225 FS. Both are fully loaded with electronics. Both have similar hours, 450 and 360 respectively. Both are about the same price and seem to be very well cared for.

I have no experience with cats, so I'm looking for input...

Peace!

apples and oranges. You have to seatrial them to make up your mind.

Both are good hulls.

Maybe it's more of a mono-hull vs. cat question...

From what I can gather, the mono guys that have gone to cats are cat lovers forever... I've never fished a cat, so I'm a little out of the loop. Am I wasting time looking at cats? Or are they really that much more stable than mono-hull boats?

You have to test them each on a seatrail as noted above-Cats are a different animal than a mono hull
go to sea on each during a test run-Thats the only way to answer your Question

The 04 Jupiter is a very good and capable hull. Jupiters are often prone to some gelcoat cracking where the bulwarks meet the sole, so if you see some cracking, it does not mean the hull was abused. They simply have too sharp a radius in the corner. But if the layout and console suit you, they are sweet.

The World Cat is a completely different boat and you'll need to demo both boats in some real slop to see which of the two hulls is suitable for you. The death roll which was alluded to is a tendency of some cats to flip in rough seas.

Im a V guy..till last week..was on my first fish Cat boat..Very impressed..and in rough water was great.. Cats roll to the outside when turning and it takes some getting use to. http://twintrimusa.com/
..Check this video out on how to have a cat corner as good if not better than a V.. watch how you can steer this cat without touching the wheel.. Bottom line Go for a ride on both. Jeff

How do you know that , i have run cats for the last 9 years and never once had the so called death roll ,you have childish comments. Test both boats under the worst conditions you expect to find out there ,see what fits the bill and enjoy . Those are 2 different animals.

It was super easy to work as well.. all on a toggle switch.. I was impressed with the amount of control, and can be used on trim tabs as well.. I'm looking at a few cats right now..

Guys, there is no difference that there is some argument on ride, re-entry, and which type of hull handles rough water better... I see that in the offshore arena where I come from. Plus and minus to all hulls.. ride as many as you can, and then make an educated guess.. on which boat suits your needs. Jeff

This is why I love THT, eventually the intellectuals arrive and bring logic to the conversation..

I rode on a 30 ft Glacier Bay - 2 ft chop 90 miles one-way to the stream out of Savannah GA. I slept most of the way out on a beanbag located on the bow.. Yes, very smooth ....

I understand that the choice is subjective. While it opens a forum like this up to a bunch of flame and people just looking to pick a fight, I can filter through the BS...this is not my first rodeo... But please feel free to share opinion based on experience.

If you have a cat, maybe you can tell me why you chose to go cat. What make/model you have and what you like about it. If you have fished both, but still swear by your mono-hull, please share that with me.

I've only owned monos. Right now I have a Boston Whaler Ventura 21. It's our 3rd boat but our first in at least 12-14 years. I fish out of Destin, FL and I'm really pushing the Whaler further than I should. The really great spots really start at about 20-30 miles out in Destin, so I need something that has more safe range, 2 motors, and big enough to open my available fishing days up.

I'm not looking for a prescription here, I've kind of come to the conclusion that I'm in the 30 foot range. Cats recently became interesting to me after reading and hearing about them from some friends.

Thanks for the feedback so far!

Peace!

Completely different rides and depends on what you plan to do with each. I like Jupiters but I think you may find that twin 225s are somewhat underpowered for that hull. Jupiter is a quality hull and every hatch is finished inside and out, this accounts for more wieght. IMHO, you will be running these 225's a bit harder to get the speed you want and buring more fuel. Good luck and tight lines.

I have experience with both and currently have a cat, not a 27'er, but a 21'er. Although not exactly the same boat in terms of length, the basic will be the same. When comparing the ride of a cat to a mono, you need to be comparing a mono that is no more than 3-5' longer than the cat to keep things on the same playing field. In comparison between the two boats you've listed, the cat will have a softer ride and be more stable, at speed and rest. Not saying the Jupiter is unstable and not a great boat, the cat will just be inherently more stable. The Jupiter will be much faster, with a cruise speed that I would guess to be at least 10 mph faster than the cat. Both are quality, well built boats. As others have said, a sea trial on the same day is the only way to tell which is better for you. It's going to come down to a personal decision as to the speed you want to cruise and the ride quality and which is more important to you. You'll be giving up a little of both with each one.

My the way, if you trailer alot, that may have a bearing on your choice as well. The World Cat is a monster on the trailer and will be alot taller than the Jupiter.

Perfect,
I have an 04 31' Jupiter with f225's, so would be happy to answer any questions you have. I've owned a wide range of boats - from crap to highest end custom. I am really impressed with the Jupiter in terms of design, construction, ride and overall utility. BTW, I am in Gulf Breeze, right down the road from Destin. Will be there with the boat April 23-24, if you want to visit and go over anything.

I think you will be very happy with the Jupiter, I know I am. Sorry I can't offer any assistance on the world cat or the mono vs cat debate.
