Default YES for 2007 Yamaha F150 - Should I?

I have a Yamaha F150 on a Grady White 205 tournament that was sold new in September 2007. I am the second owner. The engine has just over 100 hrs on it; I put 50 hrs on this past year. It had its 20, 50, and 100 hr service by the selling dealer. The factory 3 yr warranty expires this September. I have the option of buying an additional 3 years for approximately $1500.00. I am one who very rarely buys extended warranties on anything, and don't believe that I have ever wished that I had. I'm looking for advice and thoughts on purchasing the YES. Thanks in advance.

Are you sure that it does not already have the YES? They were giving away the extended warranty through most of the 2007. I know because I bought my boat then and Yamaha gave it to me with the motor.

As sure as I can be based on the (otherwise) complete paperwork I received, and the marina sales office checking the Yamaha engine record when I had the ownership updated. I was told that the original owner missed the YES promotion by less than a week.

They sell extended warranties because they are only rarely needed.

The F150 is a very reliable engine.. I have a 2004 F150 and it still runs like new. If you maintain yours properly, you shouldn't have any problems.

Another way to look at is that if you can afford the worse case scenario such as a blown power head, you should play the odds and self insure. You'll very likely come out ahead and have saved $1500.

I agree. I am glad I got it, but would not have paid for it otherwise.

Paying $1500 for three years of insurance against at worst a 10k loss. No way. -EV

I agree with the others that you will probably never need the warranty. However if you plan on selling the boat having a year or 2 left on a warranty can be very important to potential buyers. I know it was with my last boat. That would probably be the only reason to purchase one in this situation.

50/year with a F150 and you have operated it with no issues-no

If you are going to sell it within 3 years- yes

They are good engines.

Thank you for the feedback, folks. You've supported my inclination. I had considered the resale value angle. I can't speculate if I'm going to want to sell it within 3 years; I have no plans to, and even if I did in a couple of years, chances are there would be only small payback gain on the investment in YES. I'll hang on the the money for now.

Did yamaha contact you on the extension of your warranty? The only reason I ask is that when I bought my new f150s the extended warranty was never offered and I did want it(long story).I even emailed the company but they couldn't extend it because a warranty card had been issued( 2 days,I didn't even have it yet).I would extend my warranty if I had a chance.Excuse my spelling and such for today was an happy hour day!

1,400 hours on my twin F150's.

No warranty any more. No real issues either. Fingers crossed.

I would buy it. If you have any problems it will cost you $1500 in no time. Have you seen labor rates? Have you seen what Parts cost on that engine?

The risk/reward is in favor of the insurer, or they wouldn't sell (for profit) the 3 year warranty. There is no financial basis to do the deal unless you are in a position that you can afford to pay $1500 now but couldn't pay $5000 later in the unlikely event of a major problem.

This is like justifying gambling in Las Vegas on the basis that it is a "good investment".

When I bought a Johnsuki 140 I waived an additional 3 year warranty for about $500 back in cash. I took the cash. You can see what I think of paying $1500.

Also, when it comes to extended warranties in particular, don't assume that it will be easy to collect if you have a problem, and don't assume that you will be 100% covered.
