Default grady 273 chase

we are thinking of buying a new 273 chase with twin 225 yamaha 4 strokes. looking for any info from you guys about the boat or motors. we looked at the whaler 27, and really liked the layout of the grady. both were very similar though. we were looking to buy something close to the house, for warrenty purposes. lots of other boats out there but if something went wrong with it we'll have to travel a long ways. already have that problem with kevlacat. JUNK!!!!.

THANKS

CSKIFF1. I also just orderd a 27 Chase but orderd it with 200HPDI,s This will be my 5th Grady which I am kind of ashamed to admit but it tells you what I think of them. I know I am going to get alot of flack from this but here goes. I had a Grady 33 express with 225 four strokes and I did like the motors, very quiet and no smoke. HPDI,s burn the same amount of fuel if you check the performance spects on the Grady sight. I am paying $3500.00 less for the HPDI,s up front. Now the oil issue. I know this will vary from dealer to dealer but the Yamaha oil and filter cost me $92.00 for the two engines and that is if I change it myself. I put about 130 hours on a year which about 50 of them are probably trolling in the spring which equates to 2 oil changes a year. That comes to $194.00 a year again if you do it yourself. I can buy a 55gal drum of yamalube for $560.00. That comes out to about $10.00 a gallon. I will not burn anymore than 20 gal of oil a year so for me there is no savings in oil, that is if you use Yamaha oil products in both types of motors. AS far as maintanance goes there is more on a four stroke than a two stroke. There is no valve adjustment at a couple hundred hours which I understand is not cheap if needed to be done. I have had both so if you want a motor that is a little bit more quiet and no smoke at all go for the four stroke. Don,t let anyone tell you they are much cheaper to own and operate than an HPDI because in the long run they are more. And don,t forget the $3800.00 up front money. I am not trying to step on anyones toes on this issue but I owned them both and this is what I have found. I also still think the 2 stroke will take more abuse but that part of this post is just my opinion and does not make me right. Yes I know I guess I am one of those Grady cult members.

Jack
Another boat? TriState must love you once you attoned for the Luhrs. Good luck with it.

I have a 270 Islander (Jack already had one of those ) and see no reason to have anything else. When it comes time to repower I'll switch to twins for Bahamas trips but no problems at all. Good luck.

Greg, I got tired of trying to move a big boat around to different fishing areas. I want to fish Virginia in the fall. So I will tow the chase to Virginia. I know you tow your 270. What do you tow with? I bought a 2500HD chevy with the 4:10 rear. Will I be ok for towing the Chase. Good to here from you Greg.

grady2-
did you factor in the difference in cost of spark plugs?
The reason I mention this is I recently bought a set for my 4 stroke and I remember the dealer telling me the cost of HPDI plugs vs. 4 stroke plugs. I forget the actual dollar amount but thought to myself at the time "holy $h8t!" And double that if you're running twins.

Reel Pursuit, no I did not, but even if the plugs for the HPDI are $5.00 apiece more that is still only $60.00 more per year for both engines.

If anyone is interested in what looks to be a lightly used one, there is one for sale at Jupiter Seasport Marina (Jupiter Inlet Yacht Sales) with twin 150 SWS Yammies.

Jack- I have a 268 Islander 1997(is the 270 just a newer model?) Mine came w/Yam 250. I switched to twin 175 hp Fichts in 99 and went through a 2 year nightmare finally ending up with 2000- 200hp Evinrude Ram which have been fine for the past 3 years. I now have 400 hrs on them . I do a lot of offshore fishing, have the second fuel tank and all the other goodies that weigh you down and the 200's seem to be the proper power,
I am new to this board so I thought I would introduce myself.

Sharky
Mine is actually a 2000 268 Islander with a single Yamaha 250. GW changed the numbering to reflect the actual length of 27'. Beyond the Ficht problems how do you like the conversion from a single to twins? If I ever decide to frequent the Bahamas, I'd like the security of twins.

Welcome aboard.
Greg

i owned and fished one w 200 hpdi's for 1 year. Quality is there.
Depends what you want to use her for. Not built for long offshore runs in rough, or semi rough water, moderate v in the bottom. You will pound!
Otherwise no complaints, very nice layout and features, and very nice performance with the 200 hpdi's.

Get the Grady. I have had three in three years. Currently running a 2004 257 with twin f150s. Love the setup. As far as warrany goes I have not needed any.
