Default re-powering options and price

I'm re powering a 1997 26.8 Islander Grady white. I have narrowed it down to three manufactures listed below. Its been a while since i have priced outboards so what do you think of these prices?

1.Twin Yamaha 2009 150 25" shaft 6 year warranty rigged and includes taxes. $28,560.00
Trade in value of existing motors $3000.00. Total $25,560.00

2.Twin Suzuki 2009 175 25" shaft I thought these had a five year warranty rigged and includes taxes? $27,984.00

3.Twin Murcury 2006 150 25" shafts 5 year warranty rigged (no taxes) $21,990.00

What motor would you choose for this boat? I'm leaning to the Zukes.

Thanks
Steve

Did you consider E-Tec and Honda... both worth looking at.

You don't say what the prices include. Does it include all new accessories; gauges, binnacle, key switch, props, control cables, .... or just engines? If everything else is 1997, you'll want to switchout.

I've never driven a Grady cuddy (only their CC's), but I'm familar with them -- they're big, solid boats. I'm not sure I'd rig anthing less than twin 200s on your boat.

The price you've been qoted for T/150 Yamahas seems high to me. I know nothing of pricing for Suzuki or Merc.

What do you have now and are you happy with the HP?

Do you have a suzuki dealer nearby? I would lean toward them

I have thought about repower in the distant future although I believe a pair of CR F150's can be had for about 11K a piece, wait for the boat show season discounts, deduct about 1K off each motor, I don't need props or rerigging, add about 4K for install, less sale of my existing motors worth about 8K = +-16K for repower. Can't beat Yam service and the sheer number of repair & service places compared to Suzuki.

My Whaler weighs as much as the Grady.

They left me at the dock last year for the last time.Iv heard the Zukes are bullet proof and it seems like every year i see more of them on the water.

Honestly, if you can do comparable Hondas for slightly less than Yammies and Zukes, I'd go that direction.

Something else to consider about the Suzuki’s, the can spin a 16” dia. prop. This help a great deal on big and heavy boats. Also, they come with 6 years not 5 years of warranty.

Steve,

If you are in Harford County, whatever you do, Drive up 95 and go buy the engines and installation in Delaware and save on the lack of taxes there. I am assuming you have already gotten quotes from places like Rudy's Marine or Almar's? Lots of other quality outboard dealers in DE you could check out. I know ALMARS is having a nice Verado promotion.

Just my .02 worth.

Mud.......great boat......just curious...what Zuke dealer are you working with? I'm down the road in Baltimore.....repowered in the fall of '07 with a single DF300 on a 24 footer. I think the 175's would be perfect for your boat......need to have a service provider you like though.

I'm assuming you've had enough with the Ficht to last a lifetime, but if you do a little research, they did solve their issues with the Etec motors. The only one you mentioned I wouldn't consider is the Suzuki

I'd either put 175 Suzukis on it or 200 two strokes (HPDIs or maybe Optis). I'm not a ETECH fan either, but they are decent motors.

Steve,
I repowered my Caravelle 280 a couple years ago with twin Suzuki 175's and couldn't be happier. WOT @ 48 mph, great fuel economy, cruise @ 30-32 mph, plenty of low end pop. About 7500 lbs with fuel and 2 guys.

I repowered my 261 mako with Suzuki 175's over the Yamaha's and I am very happy.
I pulled off a set of 200hp carb v6 OMC and I only lost 2mph off top end, picked up 10mph on my cruse and went from 1mpg to 3.05mpg. spinning 16x21.5 props that really clock in at 16x23 in the real world. (Suzuki numbers are a tad strange)
P.M. me if you want the full story.

the heavy grady could use the higher low end torque to get on plane, i think you will benefit from this option, it worth seriously considering as well as the better warranty

That $7,000 swing from the zukes to the mercs is hard to pass up. 7 grand sure buys alot of gas and gear. Are zukes or yamahas really that much better.....I doubt it.

One thing I found, it is much easier to sell your current motors while they are still on the boat and avail for sea trial.

I would shop that Suzuki number, I think it is a hair too high. Is # that with the SIMS rigging?

On that boat, you need the highest horsepower to the lowest weight ratio possible, with a good service dealer....2 or 4 stroke, that's what you need to take into consideration. You say you love it when the fichts are running....if you hang too much weight back there, with less torque, you will no longer lover your grady white's ride......Our 95 marlin came with F225's on it already, we traded them for ETEC 250's....on an older grady, I'd never go with a 4 stroke, but the 150 Yamaha, being a 4 cylinder has fairly light weight, but I'm not sold onthe torque....how much do the zuke 175's weigh?.....I'd personally go etec, but seems you've been burned by the fichts and don't want to consider that, I understand that....so power to weight and service......otherwise you'll regret your decision....
