You are quite right about the "over and over." Here are a few links to get you started. Then for more (and there are a lot more) just use the Forum Search function. Select the "Boating Forum" and then search on "catamaran" or "cat" (But you can't just search on "cat" as the stupid software will tell you it is "too short", so search on a combo of "cat mono" "cat vs. mono" or similar, and you'll find plenty.

Any specific questions as you go along, feel free to ask.

When you start to talk about cats that large the ball game changes.I don't think it has been debated much here on the larger ones. The running surface area is considerable less on the larger cats vrs larger mono. The fuel burn and handling will be different. You could debate it to death but unless some one has specific experience on the models you are considering it will be useless. The designs are different among the manufactures and I suggest you ride in the boats and note the fuel burn in every one you demo. The larger cats have a ride advantage in smaller sea chop. Once you get in the real big stuff they will be the same. The fuel burn will be less on the properly set up larger cats.

Default Large cata/large monos

Thanks Renegade,
Any other views on this subject? The interior volume is massive on this size of cat i know but have never rode on it.How much more expensive are cats than Monos to build?

For the most parts, with the same construction materials being used for a cat and mono of equal length, the cat will be more expensive to build.

Impossible to answer....depends upon length, materials used, number produced per year, etc.

That holds true for any boat, of any length and hull style.

Well, one way to look at it is, with a Cat, you are building two boats.

What is your intended use of your new boat?

You sure you want to go that big? There are some good deal in the 33 - 34 ft outboard powered cats with pilothouses.

http://buzzardsbaycats.com/node/1 comes to mind as one. The Ameracat 33 is another. World Cat makes a great pilot house also

Let me cut to the chase on this one.

A cat owner is going to say they can go 40mph in 12' seas and the mono hull owner will say i can do 45 in the same conditions.

Reality - If a potential boat owner doesn't go out and test ride different boats until they find what they want then all the opinions in the world won't matter!

Nuff said.

At the 2006 or 2007 Miami Boat show I got the chance to ride on a Black Pearl 46 Cat the seas were running 5-6ft.We were cruising at 28-29knots burning 46gph and I stood in the forward master stateroom with very little bouncing.
That same day I rode on a Viking 48 that was cruising at the same speed burning 78gph after hitting my head twice from the bouncing I went back to the cockpit.
The Viking needed almost twice the hp to make it run

Large aluminum or steel cats are close to the same cost to build as monos built of the same material.

But if you compare an AL to a fiberglass hull then the FG should be about 45% cheaper as they can be pulled from molds, and the material is also cheaper and faster to work with.
