Default My boat was the victim of grafitti

Hey all...previous member whose account some how disappeared?!?

Anyway, does anyone know how to remove permanent ink from a white fiberglass hull??? The little bas^%$ds did it just above the waterline on the port side and just below the rubrail on the port stern.

I was thinking that On-Off might work on this but I wanted to hear some advice from some fellow mariners. The ink looks like it came from a large "sharpie" or similar marker.

I did call the police and file a report. An investigation is under way...

Acetone.

Then rewax. I'd get to it asap...don't want the ink to "soak in" and leave a shadow. Sun will eventually take that out, but best to get to it as soon as you can.

Don't get the acetone on any vinyl colors (like stripes or decals) or rubber..just fiberglass.

Default marker removal

I would take a high speed buffer, at 1400 RPM's or so and a foam disc and use some Meguires 2000 rubbing compound and buff it off.

You could try mineral spirits on a cloth but I think buffing it would be the best.

Good luck!

What Joe said...

I'd add that you should flush the entire side with fresh water after hitting it with the acetone.

Just in case...

Won't the Acetone evaporate before I can get it rinsed off?

I'll try that if the acetone doesn't work...I have to go shopping for those things.

Try a small area with the Acetone or use some rubbing compound and wax when complete. It will come clean.

I forgot to mention....I live in NY. So, it was around frezzing when it occur and has been up and down since. Not too much time above 34 and the ink doesn't see any direct sun.

well, it's late, dark & cold. I know where the acteone is and I think the off is in a door cubby...but I could be wrong. Flashlight battery is dead too, left the charger in LI.

But, if you all want immediate feedback......

Magic eraser will scratch the surface ever so slightly. You'll need to compound buff and wax after use....but it Will take it off.

Carburetor cleaner will take just about anything off. Spray it on and wipe it off. Be careful if your boat is actually painted instead of gel coat.

3M cleaner wax would work to but will be a little more labor intensive.
