Default 39' Intrepid repower

Intrepid built a few of these boats with diesels, from Cummins 6 BTA's to Cats 3196's (C-12')...This 1997 had Cummins 6 CTA's 450's and they are blown.......We are looking at repowering with C-12 or C-13's 700/800 Hp. 39 to 45 knots WOT. If anyone is interested, thanks Greg

greg, dumb ?. was it because 6b's were turned up to 450 is what torched them ? Realistically if diesels only last 10yrs, something is wrong.

They are 6 CTA 8.3's (STOCK)........If you look hard at fishing boats in fl. probably 30% are repowered because of the lack of maintenance, this one fits into this category ...The aftercoolers were stopped up with oil,dirt......the Hx were not cleaned, and the turbo's were not allowed to cool down ..I looked this boat over and was going to buy it before the current owner bought it.....He tried to take it to the Bahama's and has problems with engines ever since.

Anything off the 6cta's that are salvageable? Are the aftercooler caseings corroded badly? Are you thinking about parting them out?

Sweeeet, ride... one day I WILL have an Intrepid. Do you know what the owner paid for it (with the smoked engines)?

Greg, why would you or somebody just rebuild the c's. I don't understand how they both blew at the same time

I can't figure out if you're buying the boat, selling the boat, just chatting about it, or soliciting offers for repower quotes?

I am going to answer the last 3 question at the same time, good questions, 1st with cash as tight as it is right now I too am doing my homework. The Intrepid outboards hold there resale value, the diesels I am not sure about.that's what I'm trying to learn from this forum before I spend money unwisely. There is a 38' 1990 intrepid on the market for under 20k, with no interior just a hull, big money pit. Next this Intrepid could have the engines put back together, yes we also have a set of Cummins on the shelf. HERE is what I have noticed, these are 30 Kt boats WOT. The owners want (some of them) to run these boats at speeds with there outboard buddy's, and do the same maintenance as the outboards, which kills the diesels..This boat killed the engines with under 500 hrs the first time and has 1450 hrs and they are dead again....( Hx and aftercooler clogged, then ran hard and over heated.)
Here is what i am looking at doing, the rest of this boat is in good shape, needs all new GPS system it's 13~14 years old.......We can make this boat run 45 plus knots, and if the guy who buys it will run it below 75% power ( cruise it at 35 kts or less ) then it will live....This is what I am trying to determine, is there a market for nice 10 year old express boats that go fast and justify the cost of a good overhaul/ update. Yes the boat is for sale as is, Yes I would like to put bigger diesels in it, Yes I want a 40' to go fish tournaments with true fish boats..And in some areas the Intrepid is not thought of as a blue water boat, so I am going with caution. .......I am looking for your input....Thanks Greg

I would say that the biggest thing would be physical space, how big of an engine could you fit in there? I know the C12 Cats are pretty big engines...

We have C-12 and C-13 engines in a compact design that will fit nicely, easy enough to work on.

the 1st picture is a 39' we can get C-12/13 in there.
the 2nd picture is a 40.5' we can get C-15/16's in this one ( more room is this boat)
the 3rd is what it would look like.

Looks like plenty of room, I would say that would be an awesome package and like you said, the ability to cruise mid 30 knots would let it run with outboard powered boats and probably surpass them when it gets rough with the added weight and all.
