Default Advice on mothballed new engines

The exciting news is that I became a boat owner a week ago. I bought a new boat from a dealer that hasn't been brought into service. It has twin Yamaha 250s and they were made in Jan 2007 & Oct 2006. So they have already sat for about 3 years. NEVER been brought into service, i.e. they are direct form the factory and have never been run. No key ever turned.

OK, now my question. I intend on bringing it into service in Sept 2011. It will be kept in a climate-controlled warehouse, and the dealer will bring it into service in Sept 2011. OK, I know you're probably thinking this guy must be crazy to have engines sit that long. But I got such a deal on this boat that I could afford to put new twins on it. The factory and the dealer have indicated that I will probably be ok, some minor problems such as seals.

Are there any Yamaha mechanics out there that can give me advice on any precautions I need to take in say the first couple of months, or when bringing them into service. Any advice would be appreciated. BTW, I got the extra 3 years of Yamaha warranty, for a total of 6 years, so that was an unexpected sweetener in the deal.

I installed DFr zukes in mid 09 that were 07 engines. They were stored at a FL dealers shop not climate controlled. I got the new warranty that started after I installed and a local dealer "initialized". Engines were good, no problems, yet. Since you have done this you are pretty much just going to have to keep your fingers crossed. You didn't say if you are in a cold climate but even in warmer climate except maybe s.FL or CA you will have temp fluctuations that could draw moisture that
could condense on things like valve stems and seats and cylinder walls. Climate controlled should prevent that but if you want to be anal you could place some VERY low wattage heaters, like a little heat tape under the cowl to keep the metal a little warmer than the air. But for gods sake don't burn you motors and boat up!! What ever you do, you should have the dealer's agreement that what you are doing is OK with them and their warranty. My guess is you won't have any problems as I assume the mfg lay's them up with some anti corrosion mist or something?

I would want to spin the engine over a few times before I fired it off, to get oil up into the journals and bearings before they were stress loaded. Otherwise it should be good to go. I had a 2000 engine which I fired off for the first time in 2006, and no problems. (but did crank it a few times before actually running)
