Default Safety Equipment For Boat over 26'

Gents,
I have bought a 29' boat and want to have all the required equipment onboard but I am having trouble finding a good list. I can find them for boats 26 and under bit not over 26.
any suggestions? Alabama is the location.

Flare kit, life jacket,Whistle, fire extigusher, throwable cushion. Nothing else is needed. You don't need a ditch bag unless your a homo with 15 ARC epirb's

WTF?

Everyone has their favorite item to add to the list.
Something I like is a hand-held VHF with DSC capabilities.
If you plan to fish, a sheathed knife on your belt capable of cutting ANY line on your boat, including anchor.

Here is the Coast Guard web site for safety:
http://www.uscgboating.org/
Look under the Safety tab and check out the offered courses and Vessel Safety Check too.

Enjoy, and be safe!

Any discussion on safety items starts with how far from shore and in what conditions you plan to take the boat.
If you are canyon fishing in the northeast in October, you will need far more gear than if you are staying in Biscayne the entire time.

Thanks for the advice guys. To start with I only want to make sure I have what the coast guard requires but some of the extras mentioned make perfect sense.

For a boat that size you need a second fire ext.

Sounds like you shouldn't be driving that boat with zero experience. Take a boaters safety course. Then you will know how to at least use the safety equipment and when to use what .Just asking this question means you question your boat and captain skills

Well zero experience isn't quite accurate. I have owned boats since I was 14 and have 4 now but I have never owned a boat over 26'. I am fairly new to coastal boating as I have only been offshore a few times as captain. I know the required items for 26' and under but noticed there were additional items required as the length increases.

Laguna, Good suggestion I picked up an extra this weekend when I noticed the 2nd fire ext. bracket was empty.

Schools out of session?

Just in a case the coast guard is a little slow..

I keep water, flares, fishing stuff, first aid kit, hand held EPIRB, Hand held radio and other survival gear in my ditch bag.

If my ships going down all I do is throw my life raft and ditch bag in the water. Keeps it simple...

Do you have a DSC VHF radio? Do you have a GPS? Are they interfaced? This is a critical safety feature that is all too often overlooked. Once they are interfaced, you need to register for an MMSI.

Yes I have a new dsc vhf and a gps but they are not interfaced. I will check on the connection of the two because from what I've read it's not hard to do. I noticed you were from the Gulf Coast also and I understood the DSC system was not up and running here yet?

West Marine has a bunch of stuff on sale this week.
I picked up a pair of 1-A 10-BC ext for $52.
Replacing the BC units. I'll keep them as spares, will have 4 ext on board.
Plus their full-cushion aluminum deck chairs are $30 off!
