Random Quote: There is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.
First off, this is not a bash of E-Tecs - I'm sure they're fine motors, but am I the only one who thinks the past couple of seasons worth of Ship Shape TV amount to nothing more than E-Tec informercials?
Just got done watching today's Sunbird 21' repower from an Opti to an E-Tec and Griviskis basically trashes every other brand of motor solely on the weight issue. Past E-tec episodes include the re-power of his Boston Whaler and the powering of his update NY john boat. He never discloses whether he's actually paying for these motors or whether he's receiving them for free in exchange for his constant plugging of the brand on his show. At a minimum, he should disclose whether he's paying for the engines because he believes so much in the product or whether BRP is providing the engines for free in exchange for his endorsement.
Sorry for the mini-rant, but the exuberant, "surprised" fawning of Griviskis when he "discovered" the weight of the 200 E-Tec was too much. Like he didn't know the weight before it went on the scale......

I saw one episode when he repowered for more hp's because the kids were getting bigger as he is and praised the 115 Merc he was replacing with a 150 or 175 e-tec I beleive

I have my DVR record all the shows and usually FF(fast forward, not fish finder) thru most of them. It's 34 and raining here now and I watched it live, very painful but some good info. You really can't put much weight into anything John says, he speaks exclusively from his wallet. I would probably buy an E-Tec but John's slobbering all over them would make me do extra research to figure out why we are in agreeance.

Makes for great TV drama!
No products seen on TV like that are purchased. Lures, boats, motors, rods, reels, etc. And most of the time there is some money to boot.
Its a TV show, TV shows need sponsors. The E-Tec is not the only thing that is talked up on Ship Shape TV. The whole show is basically 30 minute commercial for various marine products.
They switched from the Mercury engines to the E-Tecs for one reason...money. Not saying that John doesn't like the E-Tecs but they rigged their boats with them for the money part.
He also took the twin 250 Opti Max's off the 28 Bluewater and hung 300 E-Tecs.
If you don't like what you're watching on your TV just change the channel.

Chris - like some of the other posters said, it still beats crappy mid-winter weather (for those of us in the NE at least) and you do get some good tips and info on his show and honestly, anything dealing with boats is good. My complaint is more on the integrity of his recommendations than anything else. I know you hang E-Tecs on your boat - wasn't trying to start a war on the E-tecs.....

If you're not trying to start another E-Tec war thread then complaining about seeing them on TV won't help.
When I watch all the fishing shows I don't get bent out of shape when the captains are yapping non stop about how great their engines are. And did you ever notice that the camera man is constantly trying to get the engines in the shot? When drifting or anchored the captain always turns the engines to the side of the boat where the camera is so the word "Yamaha" or "Mercruy" is clearly in the view.
Back to Ship Shape TV. Did you ever ask yourself if John got that new Tuna Tower for the 57 Monterey for free? Or how about all the electronics he uses? The list goes on and on. No, you only got mad when it was probably the most controversial product in the marine industry being talked up. If John were hanging Honda's and talking like they were made of gold your view point would be different.
Personally I could give two shits what engines he hangs on his boats. Unless its putting money in my pocket (like its doing for John) I don't care.
Please don't take offence to my post, the E-Tec bashing is just getting old.
I am pretty sure what you are watching is a pay to play scenario. John will sing the praises of any marine product that is featured. I still watch the show but understand that it is thinly veiled infomercial.
Guys - seriously, point out WHERE I am bashing E-Tecs. I'm bashing John and what basically amounts to a 1/2 hour infomercial.
And Chris, I hear you that these tv guys want to put on the camera the products put out by their sponsors. It's always funny (to me) when they push their products. The one difference is, they don't turn an entire episode of their show into an infomercial.
Roland Martin spends about 5% of his show touting Avet reels and Mako boats; Larry Dahlberg constantly offers everyone Jack Links beef jerky; the two guys from Northeast Angling (you guys outside the Northeast may not be familiar with this one - by far my favorite fishing show) take their Triton everywhere - but the bottom line with all of these shows is they NEVER devote one entire episode (never mind 3 or 4) to shilling a product.
Like everyone else says, he obviously gets paid to pitch the product - from a journalistic prospective, if you're going to do that, at least have the decency to disclose it.......
Again, not bashing E-Tecs. E-Tecs good, ok?

Bombardier must be getting pretty desperate to use Ship Shape as a last ditch effort to save them before the new Yamahas are introduced. I guess they are hoping that all the people that watch the show are stupid enough to believe that the Etec's are better just because they are lighter for right now. Boy are they in for a surprise.
In the big scheme of things who cares? As a simple comparison I am a Gator fan, pretty sure there are plenty on THT and in the world in general that despise them. You will never see me trying to persuade anyone who has a different opinion then mine that they should convert, or if they do not like them to stop talking S about them. These are just motors.. who really gives a flip?

Bash away halkman we know how hard it is to get through those winters without being able to fish. Boy those etecs are horrible! They even buy advertizing. Nobody else buys advertizsing..
How dare that Etec advertize on THT. And at the bottom of this post! What the heck?
I would never put one of those things on the back of my 40 degree deadrise dreadnaught!
There should not be any confusion about the relationship between Evinrude and Ship Shape TV regarding payments or consideration provided in exchange for the E-TEC motors and their use in the program. If the program is aired on broadcast television, it has to conform to FCC rules, and the rules require clear disclosure of any payments made for inclusion of broadcast program matter. See:
"Section 507 of the Communications Act, 47 U.S.C. § 508, requires that, when anyone provides or promises to provide money, services or other consideration to someone to include program matter in a broadcast, that fact must be disclosed in advance of the broadcast, ultimately to the station over which the matter is to be aired."
If E-TEC is providing money or services to the producers of ShipShape TV, they are obligated to disclose it to any TV station airing the program. The TV station is in turn required to disclose it to viewers. Look for such a disclosure at the end of the program, often in small print.
Ship Shape TV...
I started watching last year- maybe the year before...
And yes, even my wife will say as she walks into the room "Why didn't you start a TV show so you could get all that free stuff?!?!"
Is there good info, maybe. Is it a great way to get all his slip/boats/electronics (list goes on and on here) for free...sure.
I'm just jealous!

Did an E-tec scar you for life as a child or something? Take it down a notch, you sound ignorant and you do not put Yamaha in a good light.
If I click three times, maybe it will be Springtime...
