Got a tip from a friend on a 2005 Scout 175 Sportfish in great condition, dry storage kept and really low hours on a 90 4-stoke yammi for $10,000...is this a good deal on this boat I'm thinking that if I could talk him down even more than that, it would be a killer deal....what do yall boat guru's think about it? I'm new to posting on THT and if I bought this boat, it would be my first. Thanks.
it should be a good deal, but you didn't say if it has trailer, electronics, livewell, bimini, etc. what's the book value on it? any idea what it sold for new? if you need a trailer and electronics, add a few grand to the price. scout makes a good boat.

Depening (on condition, hours, maintenance, options) That's not bad. That boat sold new for about $23-$25K with a trailer.
Just curious..why do you think it would be a great deal if you could get him down even more? You've said you're not real sure what the boat is worth..so do you think it would be a great deal because of his original asking price?
Good friend used to run a 175 scout with a 130 2s and I was a big fan of the boat. My only problem with it is that water would collect in the back if you are standing near the engine while the boat is at rest. His was an older model 99 or 00 but i think that they made changes when the 4s became so popular. 90 is not enough power for that boat imo so dont expect any record breaking speeds.

I'd disagree; that boat weighs about 1300#--a 90 HP engine is just about perfect for it. Look for speeds in the mid to upper 40's. How fast would you want to go?

I believe Scout did change the design within the last few years to accommodate heavier 4 strokes, but I thought it was 2006. Its something to look into, if its one of the lighter models a 90 is plenty for that boat.
As for the water, couple of decent brass plugs and you eliminate the water problem. If god forbid you have enough water wash down into the boat to endanger your boat, those two scuppers wont matter a whole heckuva lot.
Thanks for all the replies guys...and it does come with all the "goodies"...trailer, FF/GPS, Bimini top...all the standard stuff plus a couple bells and whistles that the owner put on it....of course, I haven't seen the boat in person, but this is coming from my son's Grandfather (my son's mom's dad) who also is a Scout owner and wants the boat for himself, but he just remodeled his kitchen and bathroom...etc etc, momma won't let me buy a new toy etc etc etc...so he passed the deal along to me...I'm just making sure that I don't make an impulse buy, ya know...the original owner bought it new and only uses it when he comes down south to his "summer home" and said that he's tired of paying the storage fee for it and doesn't get enough play time...I guess it's a "more money, more problems" situation for him

I bought my boat last year, so I'm not exactly up on current pricing. But it "sounds" like a good deal. A simple search will give you plenty of ideas on what to look for/check when buying a used boat. Most of all though I would recommend a sea trial.
You also may want to check with Scout to see when they bulked up their models to allow for 4s. A sea trial will also give you an idea of whether its got jump or not.
I spent 2 years looking at used Scouts and bought one last year..yea I am slow. Provided its in excellent condition and no pending costs (trailer, electronics, or motor issues) it sounds like a good price.
I am not a boat guru, but have a Scout 17 Dorado (slightly heavier I assume than a cc). I wanted a 115hp, got 90, and use it for skiing and fishing. With a family of 5 in the boat, the 90 horses will pop a skier up no problem. As for the scupper issues, I get a tiny bit of water right around them, but not enough to even mention. Throw on a larger motor, a cooler, and a couple guys standing around the rocket launchers, and sure, your feet may get a little wet.
