Default GM 6.2 diesels

I'm looking to by a 27 Abemarle with a pair of 92 GM 6.2 turbo diesels. Does any body know about these engines good or bad? These have 1250 hours and have been sitting for 2 years.

Thanks
Gary

GW,

Pennisulars? When we were selling Albies we sold a few of there boats with those engines. But not a 27. All were in 32's. Great running engines when they are running. This one your looking at has 1250 hours so thats a great sign. Engine room has got to be tight. Inboards? They tend to be a little smokey(transom). Went through a lot of glow plugs too. Theres one on each cylinder.

We have a local commercial fisherman that has one of those engines in a 40 fish tug. They just absolutly abuse it and use it all winter too. I dont know how many*thousands of hours they have on her.*Need to have block heaters on them because when its cold, they are very*hard starting. Kinda like the 2-stroke Detroits are.

I'm not sure that 12 year old engines with only 1250 hrs that have been sitting for 2 years is necessarily a good sign. Will especially depend on how it was put up. Unwinterized, with sumps full of dirty oil, would be a very bad sign. Those engines in a boat being used every day will likely outlast ones used only intermittantly.

Thanks for the replys .The engine room is not that bad but the the top of the engines is a little busy with the turbo's. These are Detroit built to GM standards Pennisulars are simlar.

285 EXP The boat has been run only 4 times in the last 2 years. The current owner doese not have time to use it.I know it has not run since september and is dry stored. The original owner used the boat a lot had a short run to the stream. I agree having it sit for 2 years is not a good thing but not a big negative either.

Those engines first started appearing in the late 80's and they had a lot of problems early on keeping them running. As SIM said they were good engines when they were running, and I too remember a soot problem. I'm not sure they're still marinizing & using that engine in boats? If you do the deal be sure you have an engine survey performed.

I checked on a survey for just the engines and they wanted $2700.00 and I can buy a rebuilt long block for $1600.00 sooo I will check them my self . Pennsular still makes these but they are 6.5s.

Gary,

I am sure you can get there phone number here http://www.peninsulardiesel.com/* . Talk with Matt Koenig(Sp). He owns the company. He knows the engines updownforward and backwards.

The 6.2's were big problems. The 6.5's are a little better.
