Default Weather radar on cell phone

I saw this on our local fishing board and signed up this week after getting caught in a storm on Monday. It is awsome. I have the weather including local radar loops of the region on my cell phone. The company I am with is http://www.my-cast.com/ because I have Cingular. It is just like having my computer on the boat to see if storms are coming and where they are. It is a valuable tool for in-shore fisherman who cannot see rain or storms coming on their radar due to ground clutter. The cost is less than $4 per month plus the cost of web access on the phone.

The same type of service is available to other cell co's through here:

Does the cell phone need to be in range of the coast as it would for normal calls? It looks pretty cool. Too bad most of my fishing is far enough offshore that I would need some sort of satellite connection. I guess it's just a matter of time with that, though...

Thanks for the link John. I am now a bay fisherman so the cell phone works great and is cheep! Good to know those options are available.

Cooper, yes you have to be in cell coverage in order to take advantage of the service. For costal fisherman and bay fisherman it is a very inexpensive service that requires no new electronics. I have already found it to be very useful!

What kind of resolution does it get? I guess, how far does it zoom in and how often does it update? I like it!

It is just like looking at your computer monitor as far as resolution goes. The screen is on the small size of course. I plan on using it to see if storms are coming or in the area. It updates often. Just like the weather channel site. You down load the most recent radar loop or forecasts etc. I have a motorola v 400 phone and it works great so far.

You also have to factor in the cost of web access, at least on Cingular. They have a small plan of 7.95/mo or a high usage plan of 19.95/ mo.
