I grew up in Houston and now live in a suburb of Orlando.
Good:
- Fishing!!! Atlantic on one side, Gulf on the other, and legendary flats fishing (Mosquito Lagoo, etc.).
- Much smaller and less populated than Houston - although, we are growing very quickly.
- Winters are warmer and don't last as long.
- Watching rockets take off from your back yard, going to Disney, Universal, etc. anytime you want, taking a drive to The Keys (only 6 hours away) for the weekend, etc.
- Although flooding does occur in this area every now and then, it is nothing like Houston has experienced in the last few years.
- Some folks think the traffic is bad here, but nothing is comparable to what is seen every day on 59, 45 and 10.
Bad:
- No Lupe Tortillas, Los Tios, Pappasito's, Whataburger (however, they are supposed to coming any day now), Shipley's, Good Company BBQ, Luther's BBQ, etc.
- You can only see the Astros during Spring Training.
Probably one of the hotest cities in FLA being land locked. 1.5 hrs to either coast. Very congested, due to the tourism trade. One of the most visited cities in the US. Gets the winter weather, since it is north of Lake Ockeechobee. Gets some of the worst thunderstorms. Need to travel south of Vero Beach to get that aqua clear turquise water. Plus side - lots of things to do, other than boating, unless you like lakes and skiing. Bass fishing very big. The hot bed for jobs in FLa, plenty of housing to choose from, centrally located to get to just about anywhere in Fla with transportation and time.
Mike-T, I saw a whataburger just over the Florida line in Thomasville last weekend, your right, it cant be long. Like stated above Orlando is a great place to live.
lotsa pretty little betties to look at in orlando...
no hotter or more humid there than in houston or anywhere else on the gulf coast
good jobs available
congested near the theme parks
many touristas and transplants
not alot of "character" left...unless you consider mickey a character
I lived and boated in Houston while in High School, now in Florida (not Orlando, but north Tampa).
Simple, you can actually see you feet while standing waist deep in water. No tar balls either! Texas' biggest toilet bowl is Galveston Bay. If you've been to Padre Island, Port Aransas area then compare back to Houston.
Saltwater boating in Florida is awesome. Either coast, you can't loose. Just pick where you want to live carefuly, traffic is a PITA.
And true, if you want good BBQ you'll have to make it yourself. So count on getting a good smoker, plenty of oak here to smoke with. I swear no one knows what brisket is here.
John, I think that is about 10 months or more too long. I am here now!
Maybe you need to sell your wife on you taking a trip to scout the area out with me... On the bay of course!

Get that Triton down hear and take advantage of it!
Traffic stinks if you don't know how to get around it.
U will do the tourist scene once or twice and from then on only when company comes to town and wants to go.
U will find a great variety of fishing on both coasts.
Rockets
Racing
etc.
Do not come to Central Florida! The bugs are terrible, tourists are everywhere, traffic is out of control, hurricanes are always a threat, the land is flat, more yankees moving in every day and there is no good BBQ
Seriously you will probably like it. I live on the coast in Brevard County about 50 miles east of Orlando. Surrounded by salt water, I love it. If your wife's job is on the east side of Orlando you might consider Brevard County. Much less crowded, good schools if that is a factor, much fishing and boating. Orlando Airport is only an hours drive from my house by the Beeline Expressway.
I moved up here to escape the crowds in Miami-Ft Lauderdale and love it. Justr don't bring a crowd with you
I lived in SW Orlando for 8 yrs. - the Dr. Phillips area. There are a ton of freshwater lakes nearby, but if you want salt it's 1.5 hrs. either way you go. The whole time I was there I never met anyone that was from Florida - everyone is a transplant!
Florida does have some distinct advantages, though - no state income tax, and no property tax on boats!
Don't come to Orlando. One more car will result in total girdlock. One me boat between me and the coast on Saturday morning and I might go crazy. One more Yankee in Bass pro shop that I have to crawl over to get to what I need and I just might snap. This a terrible place to live. I have suffered it for 10 years. Please any one from above the state line stay out.
It's a great place to live , lots of work and the weather is super. not to mention the fishing potential you'll have and meeting new fishing folks . The fl sportsman forum east central guy's have some of the best BASH (blowout get together partys )around ....
No jobs in Houston, come on John? Who will organize our luncheons? Help with our electronics? I have not been tp Orlando in many years, but have made to 2 trips to Tampa and Sarasota. IMO highways are awesome, and you already know about the beaches, but the price of housing on the water(canal) is much more expensive. Either way, good luck, glad you bought that new truck to tow your boat 1000 miles. See you at lunch(maybe we can vote today).
