Default Volvo Penta D6 350

My boat has a single Volvo D6 350 with a Duoprop, and I put 207 hours on it in the first season. So far I am quite happy with it. The boat weighs in at about 12.5K lbs and I can cruise at 26kts at 10gph. Top end is 37kts at 20gph. The one problem I had was that the outdrive would loose index over time, and it took them three tries to fix it, but no problems after that. They also had a recall on the computers and changed them out, although I had no problems with them. 3MPG is pretty good for a 31' cabin boat, and the speed is plenty fast. The biggest complaint so far is having people tell me I should have gone with twin outboards.

SEawolf is awesome!!!! Answer to 350 just a chevy SM that Volvo converts to marine--VP part are easy to get thur Sims however more $$ than merc VP drives are great unless Composite XDP then run-- even VP ran out ie stop making them--

Great engines, very reliable and absolutely no smoke. The outdrives are so-so. Several people, myself included, have had trouble with the gear shifting mechanical cables from the actuator to the outdrive. Avoid bends, even gentle ones, on the path of the cables if you can.

It depends on how much you use them and what type of dealer support you have. I have twin D-6 310hp that where new in 2007. I believe the main difference between the 310 and the 350 is the 350 has a compressor on it. Maintenance is every 100 hours. engine oil 20.1 L, 1 air filter,2 oil filters,1 crank case filter, and outdrive oil 5.2 L. estimate cost per engine $400 I currently have 2200 hours on my engines
700 hours shift accuator port engine $760 June 2008
900 hours high pressure fuel pump starboard engine purchased used pump unable to new pump 45 day back log $800 new pump is $2800 August 2008
2008 had seals leak on both outdrive replace twice deal said he would pull drives and replace over winter months checked on boat January 2009 and drives had not been worked on. Order two new drives,1 starter, and spare altenator from Europe total cost $11000
May 2009 had local dealer install new drives and pull old drives and take back to shop to inspect and repair seals.
June 2009 trim tabs on starboard side stop working corrosion on connectors
July 2009 seal lower unit port drive out dealer replace
August same out drive port side seal out dealer again changed out seal
August 20 port seal still leaking dealer change seal again still has not fixed older drive starboard out drives shows signs of heating up.
Sept 2009 put boat up for winter 1 prop hub starboard side spun out both outdrives have water in them dealer is going to fix under warrenty
April 13 2010 deal told me he would fix out drives on boat did not but the other drives in his shop where ready to go. Installed out drives but the spacing on the props was not right. The dealer did not put the spacers back in lower unit. Took todays but outdrives back on working, 1500 hours on engines
June 10th fresh water pump Port Engine $860
June 18 Starboard out drive quit working come in on 1 engine dealer replace drive will fix when gets time
July 5 Starboard Engine will not start trim say outdrive at 56 degrees but is in normal position I trouble shoot system and bump EVC and every thing starts working my guess loose connection 1700 hours
July 12 Starboard engine will not start again I check EVC and unplug it nothing happens plug it back in and still nothing happens . I then plug the starboard engine into the port engine EVC and it starts right up. I then plug the Port engine into the Starboard EVC and it will not start.I put every back the way it was and the Starboard engine would not start. I got mad hit it with my fist and it starts working. I call the Local Volvo guy he can find nothing wrong. I called In Demand Marine in Homer and sent me another EVC for $2000. The local dealer could not get the new EVC to work so he sent it off to be programed. That took about 8 days. August 2 the old EVC died and the local dealer tried to install the new EVC and failed. He was going to purchase another one at $4500 but I asked him if he had call Seattle for help. He said no but he had talked to someone else. I called Seattle and had him talk with Denny. After talking with denny it took less than 5 minutes to get Starboard EVC working.
August 17 Starboard Shift Accuator 2100 hours went out also changed out Port Alternator
August 26 Port Outdrive went out 2200 hours bearing in top box

I think captaindd has given you a fair answer. For more, just use the search function here, search on "volvo" or "volvo drive" or "volvo outdrive" in this forum. There is lots of information there. I won't try to summarize it, just check it out for yourself.

Here are the two most recent ones:

Captaindd - thanks for sharing your experience, I think alot of peolple will appreciate it. Sounds like the engines them selves weren,t too bad , but those outdrives forget it, I do too many offshore trips for that hassel.By the way ,what kind of boat?

Go with a Cummins diesel and a Konrad sterndrive...they have a single and counter rotation prop available. Worth a look for a single diesel offshore boat.
