Default Shinnecock Canal Openings?

I will need to transit the lock on the Shinnecock Canal from the North to the South on an upcoming weekend in July. When is the lock open--what is the schedule?

No, that site is doing notta. Anywho, wether it's open or not, you can go thru. If it's "closed" you just lock thru, if it's open, you cruise thru. Either way, it's easy as pie.

There are times when the locks are open that the current rips through the canal. Experienced sailors can handle their boats when the current is this fast, but it is not the easiest thing in the world to do. On a summer weekend day the boat traffic can be heavy which does not help matters.

You can call the lock operator at (631) 852-8299 for the times the locks are closed. He/she can usually give you the approximate schedules a few days in advance of your trip. I strongly advise that you try to time it to when the locks are closed, even though this may cost some additional wait time, especially on weekends. Under no circumstances should you try to head south through the locks (Peconic to Shinnecock Bay) when the locks are open, even in a moderate north to south current. You will have little or no control, even with twin screw inboards. I seen more than a few people damage their boats trying to do this.

Thanks. I assume boats do transit the canal when open? I am pretty experienced.

If you are confident of your boat handling abilities in tight spaces with an extremely swift current, then go for it and do not worry about the timing.
