i would talk with a detroit specialist regarding upgrading to turbo (most likely upping the injectors and the pump also) , i'm 99% sure the 53 is a wet sleeved, you can resleeve i doubt you can get them in over bore.
Loud? Depending on the boat design - yeah like you wouldn't believe. Sweet sound though. CG used them in their surf boats since they would pretty much run upside down without complaining. Some old timers swear by the DD sound for raising fish. If they're not turbo already forget about putting turbo's on. If the engines are in decent shape and can make their rated rpm they may outlast you. My DD mechanic was telling me about a DD on a holding pond pump that had to get rebuilt - second or third time since 1948!
Bottom line is get a survey and a sea trial. If the boat is not acceptable due to speed, noise, etc then you aren't going to fix it without a repower. A repower of 6V53's can be tricky because most modern engines are inline now and longer. It all depends on how much space is in front of the engine. I would take a close look at the engine room before you buy.
not exactly true in this application. A supercharger is designed to increase intake manifold pressure as is a turbocharger. The blower on this engine is designed to scavenge the air charge, not boost it. Unique to many two strokes where scavenging efficiency without a blower would be poor. That is why the higher HP models have a turbocharger, they do in fact boost the inlet air pressure significantly.
Leak alot of oil?
Detroit Diesel was the engine of choice in construction equipment up to the mid 80's, and some did leak oil, but mostly from the breather tube, and that was due to over idling.
I have seen it too many times in a Marina, start the engine up and let it idle for a half an hour, which is the worse thing to do with a 2 stroke diesel, once it warms up, crack the throttle up over 1000 rpm, if you don't want to hear the noise, don't start the engines until your ready to go. all that idling causes blow by [oil going past the cylinders]
Idling any Diesel for long periods, or any engine is a bad habit, but in a 2 stroke Detroit it can cause premature failure, because when at idle they run too cool.
It has been mentioned several times about these engines being loud. Are they like ridiculously loud? Is there a way to quiet them down? ( other than passing out hearing protection )
Would I be wise to have my local dealer turbo charge them if possible and bore them out for more hp during the rebuild?
If I increase HP that would allow me to turn a larger prop. Would I have to change gears to get more speed? Not sure how this works.
Would be happy with a 20 knt. cruise.
Thanks,
VC
On a quite day...everyone in town will know where you are
They are loud no question about it. My 6-92's are relatively quite while at cruise in the salon of the boat. When I say relatively I mean you can still watch the tv and hear what the people are saying on it. The exhaust noise is another story. It sounds like two Grey Hound buses drag racing down the highway at cruise. It sounds awsome for the first 20 minutes then starts to get a little annoying. Detroit's can be muffled, but, they don't like a lot of back pressure. Good luck!

The sound of a Detroit cannot be matched!
A guy on my lagoon had a 38 Topaz with 671's, he lived about 500 yrds away, I knew the minute he fired that boat up, and its not just the sound, i could feel the vibration in my house, which is the reason people say they raise fish.
